Obsidian Entertainment Transitioned Under Bethesda Amid Xbox Restructuring

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • Obsidian Entertainment has been integrated into Bethesda following Xbox’s ongoing restructuring.
  • Despite layoffs and concerns, Bethesda’s president reassures that Obsidian will maintain its unique creative identity.
  • The changes include a focus on major franchises and a reevaluation of upcoming titles.

Obsidian Entertainment has officially come under Bethesda’s management as part of Xbox’s significant reorganization efforts, which are still in progress. Bethesda’s president, Jill Braff, indicated that the renowned RPG developer will retain its “creative identity,” despite the substantial corporate upheaval.

This restructuring, described as a “reset,” began earlier this year when Xbox laid off 1,600 employees and separated from five first-party developers. More recently, an additional 268 jobs were eliminated within the division. Consequently, several studios have been realigned within Microsoft’s gaming divisions; notable transitions include Halo, Rare (Sea of Thieves), and World’s Edge (Age of Empires) now operating under Activision, while Obsidian is transitioned to Bethesda, moving away from the former Xbox Game Studios label.

Concerns among fans about Obsidian’s potential downgrade to a support studio arose, especially as the company is currently developing a new Fallout game alongside Bethesda Game Studios. However, in a communication to staff, Braff conveyed that there is little cause for concern.

“The creative identity and strengths that make Obsidian distinct will remain at the core of their studio and work,” Braff stated in an email to employees, as reported by Aftermath. She emphasized that CEO Feargus Urquhart and the leadership team at Obsidian would continue in their roles, reporting directly to her, while Bethesda Game Studios maintains leadership over the Fallout franchise. Collaboration between the two teams will build on their established partnership and the ongoing development of the new Fallout project, with further updates expected in the coming months. This arrangement is intended to bolster the franchise-led model that Bethesda has been reinforcing.

In the earlier waves of layoffs this summer, Xbox saw Obsidian lose approximately 25% of its workforce, which resulted in the cancellation of several projects still in development. The emphasis on a “franchise-led model” appears to be the driving factor behind these changes. Unlike previous Xbox leadership’s hands-off approach with internal developers, new CEO Asha Sharma has demonstrated a commitment to prioritizing the company’s flagship franchises, including The Elder Scrolls, Halo, and Fallout. The underperformance of many of Obsidian’s recent titles this generation, such as Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, may further clarify the studio’s return to the Fallout series.
