Steam Achieves Record-Breaking Concurrent Users with Over 43.5 Million
- Steam sets a new record with 43,505,724 concurrent users.
- More than 14 million players were online in-game, also a new record.
- Valve’s revenue from Steam reached an estimated $15 billion by September.
Valve’s digital distribution platform, Steam, has set a remarkable new record for concurrent users, reaching 43,505,724 on Sunday, as reported by SteamDB. This figure reflects players online simultaneously worldwide, encompassing both in-game and out-of-game activity.
Of this record-breaking total, over 14 million users were engaged in games at the same time, marking another significant peak. This is the highest number of simultaneous users in Steam’s 23-year history, and notably, it is the second occasion this year that Valve has surpassed its own record, having previously recorded over 42 million concurrent players in January.
Interestingly, the record was established shortly after the conclusion of Steam’s Autumn Sale, rather than during the event. Over the preceding weeks, several high-profile game launches occurred, including the global release of the free-to-play MMO Aion 2, which reached a peak of 397,905 concurrent players at its launch.
The top ten most played games on Steam remain similar, with one significant exception: the game Deadlock saw a substantial increase in player numbers, peaking at 262,145 concurrent players following a major update. Deadlock is described as Valve’s third-person MOBA-shooter hybrid, although the developer has yet to officially announce it.
These developments signal Steam’s ongoing growth and its prominent position in the PC gaming industry. The increase in user traffic is expected to translate into revenue for Valve, with estimates indicating that the company generated approximately $15 billion (~£11.1 billion) from Steam by September. Forza Horizon 6 stands out as the platform’s biggest new release by revenue this year.
