Shoppers gathered at New Market in Kolkata, India, on September 21, 2026, ahead of the Durga Puja festival. The latest data shows that India’s headline inflation rose to 5.54% in September, up from 4.82% in August, which has intensified pressure on the central bank to tighten monetary policy further. This figure exceeded economists’ estimates of 5.40%, marking 11 consecutive months of rising inflation and reaching the highest level observed in 22 months.

Food inflation increased significantly to 7.74% in September from 5.97% the previous month, with rural areas experiencing sharper price hikes compared to urban centers, according to the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation. Transport services for goods saw inflation increase by 14.73%, while personal transport inflation rose by 7.46%.

Earlier in October, the Reserve Bank of India raised interest rates for the first time since 2023, joining global trends of monetary tightening in response to escalating inflation concerns. The RBI indicated that under current conditions, further rate cuts are “off the table in the near term,” emphasizing that future actions may consist of additional rate hikes or maintaining the current rates.

Inflation Risks Mount

India finds itself particularly vulnerable to supply disruptions stemming from the ongoing conflict in Iran, as the country depends on imports for nearly 85% of its fuel needs. Prior to the Iran war, it had significantly relied on energy supplies flowing through the Strait of Hormuz. Consequently, oil prices have remained high due to Middle Eastern tensions, and experts warn of continued volatility influenced by regional conflicts and natural disasters such as Hurricane Isaias.

Looking ahead, the RBI anticipates core inflation to average at 4.4% for the fiscal year ending March 2027, with headline inflation projected at 5.2%, which exceeds the central bank’s medium-term target of 4%. The RBI also upgraded its economic growth forecast to 7.1% but cautioned that persistent geopolitical tensions, trade disputes, tighter financial conditions, and high international commodity prices could dampen economic activity.

The rural economy faces additional challenges from the Super El Nino weather phenomenon, which resulted in the country experiencing its lowest rainfall in over a decade between June and September—crucial months for rain-fed agriculture. According to the India Meteorological Department, this rainfall represents the fourth lowest since 2001 and the 13th driest since 1901, severely impacting agricultural regions in states like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana, which are grappling with extreme drought conditions.

A report from HSBC on October 7 suggested the possibility of another rate hike in December, following the recent RBI policy decisions. Analysts noted that while this may not signify an extensive tightening cycle, it still indicates a significant adjustment, projecting that September’s retail inflation data will reflect a “sizeable headline pop.”
