What the Latest Producer Price Index and Retail Sales Reveal Will Shock You!

Date:

September Producer Price Index Surges, Reflecting Ongoing Inflationary Pressures

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • September’s producer price index increased by 1.3% monthly and 6.3% annually, exceeding forecasts.
  • Core PPI, excluding food and energy, rose 0.7% monthly and 5% annually, driven mainly by energy costs.
  • Retail sales grew by 0.8%, signaling high prices impacting consumer spending behavior.

September’s producer price index reported a significantly higher-than-expected increase, highlighting persistent inflationary pressures primarily attributed to energy costs amid the U.S. conflict with Iran. The Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed that the measure of underlying inflation pressures escalated by 1.3% for the month and 6.3% on an annual basis, marking the highest monthly and annual gains since March and December of 2022, respectively.

These results surpassed the predictions of economists surveyed by Dow Jones, who had estimated a monthly increase of just 0.6% and an annual rise of 5.5%. The surge in the index was largely driven by rising energy prices, as the conflict in the Middle East has disrupted oil supplies.

Core PPI, which excludes the often-volatile food and energy sectors, increased by 0.7% in September and 5% year-over-year. Notably, the BLS noted that nearly half of the rise in processed goods for immediate demand was linked to increasing diesel fuel prices.

This report follows closely on the heels of the consumer price index data released the previous Wednesday, revealing a 0.6% increase from August to September and a 3.7% rise on an annual basis. This again surpassed economists’ expectations of a 0.6% monthly increase and a 3.6% annual increase.

When excluding food and energy, core CPI saw a 0.3% month-to-month increase and a 2.6% year-over-year rise, both of which also exceeded forecasts of 0.2% and 2.5%, respectively. Furthermore, the Wednesday release of the Beige Book by the Federal Reserve reported the highest number of mentions related to inflation observed in its history, according to analysis by Bespoke Investment Group.

Retail sales data released on Thursday showed a growth of 0.8% in September, outperforming the projected 0.4% increase by economists. However, this growth marked a deceleration from the previous month when retail sales rose over 1%. Excluding autos and gas stations, retail sales increased just 0.25% from August to September, reflecting the impact of elevated fuel prices on consumer spending habits.

This week’s data trends suggest a shift in expectations regarding monetary policy, with a growing minority of traders in Fed funds futures anticipating a rate hike at the upcoming central bank meeting. Current pricing indicates a nearly 34% chance of such an increase on October 28, a rise from under 18% a week prior. Approximately 90% of traders expect at least one rate hike by year-end.

Chris Zaccarelli, Chief Investment Officer at Northlight Asset Management, noted, “With a second day in a row of higher-than-expected inflation numbers, it seems the Fed will have no choice but to raise rates again this year.”

These reports are pivotal as they provide critical insights into current inflation trends in the U.S. ahead of the upcoming midterm elections, which could significantly influence the power dynamics within Washington.
