Wardogs Season 2 Launch Encountered Tank Exploit, Now Resolved
- Wardogs’ second season debuted with players exploiting tank unlocks on day one.
- The exploit, which allowed players to quickly gain XP, has been fixed with a backend update.
- Developer Bulkhead issued warnings and temporary bans for excessive exploit use, affecting fewer than 1,000 players.
This week, the launch of Wardogs’ second season revealed the challenges of balancing game mechanics as players quickly discovered an exploit that allowed them to unlock tanks on the first day. By driving just outside their HQ and dropping off pallets, players could earn substantial XP and, combined with expedited XP gains for the Driver role, rapidly progress to unlock tanks.
This exploit posed challenges for the majority of players who were unprepared to counter tanks, as progressing through alternative paths to unlock anti-tank equipment took significantly longer than the minimal time spent exploiting this XP loophole.
In response, Howard Philpott, co-founder of Bulkhead, acknowledged the issue on the Wardogs Discord, stating: “We’re holding our hands up and we got a few things wrong.” He detailed that a backend update was underway to rectify the progression bug affecting the Driver XP path and eliminate the exploit, while also removing the Lonestar team’s cash and XP bonuses.
Technical designer Mark Tadros added in a video that players who excessively exploited the system would face 24-hour bans, although the number of impacted players is below 1,000. Others who engaged in the exploit at a lesser degree appear to remain unpenalized.
While the adjustments were necessary, community reactions have been mixed. Some players expressed disappointment over missing the advantageous XP gains, particularly those who were at work during the peak hours of the exploit.
Despite the exploit concerns, Wardogs continues to gain recognition as a compelling and successful military first-person shooter, described in early access reviews as a “brilliantly refreshing take on the genre.”
