Origame Digital Bans Penguin Colony from Sale in Israel
- Origame Digital’s new game, Penguin Colony, is banned from being sold in Israel.
- The developer’s decision is linked to solidarity with Palestine amid ongoing conflicts.
- Penguin Colony features a political message and land acknowledgment regarding its creation.
Origame Digital, known for the acclaimed 2020 title Umurangi Generation, has recently launched its new game, Penguin Colony, but has opted to prohibit its sale in Israel. This Lovecraftian horror game, which allows players to experience the world through the perspective of a penguin, draws inspiration from H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness.
The publisher, Fellow Traveller, confirmed the game’s unavailability in Israel through a Steam community thread, initiated by a user from Israel who questioned whether the game had been removed from the platform.
In response, Fellow Traveller stated, “While in general we seek to bring our games to as many potential players as possible, we believe strongly that developers have the right to control where their games are sold. In this case, the developer asked us to block sale in Israel. In the absence of more organised sanctions, this act is intended to demonstrate solidarity with Palestine. We fully support their decision.”
This political stance is reinforced within penguin colony itself, displaying a post-credits message that condemns the perceived genocide of the Palestinian people. A statement shared online reads, “The cowardice of the Games Industry during the ongoing genocide of Palestine by Israel will be recorded by the art it makes.”
Origame Digital has consistently expressed its political views in its games, making this latest decision unsurprising. The game also opens with a strong land acknowledgment, stating, “This game was made on Wurundjeri Woiwurrung land. The Kulin Nation never ceded sovereignty to the British Commonwealth. We pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging as Indigenous creatives working on land that isn’t our own. The land will always be Aboriginal Land no matter what.”
In Penguin Colony, players assume the role of a penguin navigating chaos inflicted by rival human factions in search of an ancient entity. The game is currently available on PC, with console versions slated for 2027.
In related news, House House, the studio behind the celebrated game Big Walk, has announced it will not release an Xbox version due to parent company Microsoft’s involvement in the BDS boycott. Microsoft’s ties to Israel include providing military cloud and AI systems amid ongoing conflicts.
