HSBC CEO Shocks the Industry: What’s Driving the AI-Fueled Data Center Financing Craze?

Date:

HSBC CEO Highlights AI as Transformational Technology Amid Investment Caution

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • HSBC CEO Georges Elhedery calls AI a major enabler for transforming businesses.
  • Investment in data centers requires careful evaluation of contracts and tenancy agreements.
  • Global spending on data centers expected to reach $7 trillion by 2030 amid rising AI-related debt.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is being recognized as a pivotal technology that offers vast investment opportunities, but investors are urged to exercise caution, particularly regarding data centers. This perspective was shared by HSBC CEO Georges Elhedery during an interview with CNBC’s Dan Murphy on Tuesday.

Elhedery described AI as “a major enabler to re-engineer and reimagine all our businesses, all our activities,” emphasizing its potential to enhance productivity. “It’s going to put a lot of power back in the hands of our colleagues,” he remarked, noting HSBC’s commitment to adopting AI comprehensively to “re-engineer the bank.”

Despite the optimism surrounding AI, Elhedery cautioned investors to be selective when investing in the underlying infrastructure. He stated, “One has to be selective,” advising a close examination of the quality of tenancy agreements and pricing of contracts since not all investment opportunities meet high standards, with some being potentially more challenging.

HSBC, based in London, is recognized as the world’s seventh-largest bank and the largest lender in Europe, with nearly $3 trillion in assets. In its 2025 annual report, the bank expressed aspirations to be “the leading bank for fast-growing transition ecosystems,” underlining its engagement across various sectors including data centers and AI.

Data centers, crucial for powering AI and cloud computing, have witnessed substantial growth, with investments projected to reach $7 trillion globally by 2030, according to McKinsey. Big Tech is increasingly relying on private credit to fund the development of these facilities, as the data center industry experiences a multibillion-dollar boom.

However, the influx of AI borrowing is straining financial markets, especially as the cost of capital rises. Corporations are accumulating significant debt in a race to finance AI developments and data center expansions.

At the recent GZERO Summit in London, Mohamed El-Erian, chief economic adviser of Allianz, discussed the competitive environment for financing between governments and AI companies, contributing to pressures in bond markets. He noted significant borrowing by governments and highlighted how hyperscalers raised $200 billion in bond financing last year, with projections to raise a trillion in the current year, driven by their belief in the transformative power of AI.

Currently, bond yields across various major economies are reaching multi-decade highs due to concerns over rising government deficits and inflation, along with more aggressive monetary policies from central banks. Earlier this year, JPMorgan Chase estimated that approximately $4.1 trillion in AI-related debt is expected to be issued by the decade’s end as companies continue to expand their operational capacities.
