Helldivers 2 Implements Easy Anti-Cheat After GameGuard Policy Review
- Developer Arrowhead Game Studios switches from GameGuard to Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) for Helldivers 2.
- Non-malicious mods may require updates to function properly alongside EAC.
- UK players still facing access issues; Sony is working on a resolution with Valve.
Helldivers 2 is set to change its anti-cheat system as developer Arrowhead Game Studios announced that its previous GameGuard policy “wasn’t as effective as it could have been.” This announcement was made in a post on the game’s Steam page.
Arrowhead explained the change, stating, “The implementation of GameGuard for Helldivers 2 wasn’t as effective as it could have been […] In the end, we decided to take another path with EAC. EAC is an industry standard used in over 200 games, and we believe this will be an effective way to protect the Galactic War and will better protect fair gameplay and the integrity of the game.”
As part of this transition, Arrowhead noted that certain non-malicious mods, including cosmetic changes, will need updates to be compatible with Easy Anti-Cheat. The studio acknowledged the role of mods in PC gaming, expressing appreciation for the creativity behind such changes. “We know mods are part of the DNA of PC gaming and gaming communities as a whole,” the post read.
However, the developers highlighted the need to protect players from modifications that create unfair advantages, stating, “These changes mean that some mods, particularly the types that are affecting the experience of other players, may no longer function.”
Players who believe a non-malicious mod has been incorrectly blocked by Easy Anti-Cheat are encouraged to reach out via Zendesk, indicating a potential transitional phase for mod compatibility.
Despite Easy Anti-Cheat becoming a standard measure in many PC games, players in the UK are currently unable to access Helldivers 2 due to an unresolved issue. Sony has committed to addressing this problem with Valve, but no solution has been provided as of yet.
