Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Introduces Challenging YOLO Difficulty
- The newly launched YOLO difficulty in Modern Warfare 4 allows players to complete the campaign with a single life.
- Reddit user Lost-Equivalent2352 completed the campaign on YOLO in 20 hours, utilizing strategic hiding and flashbangs.
- Unlocking YOLO requires finishing the campaign on Realism difficulty, with minimal rewards upon completion.
The campaign for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is currently available in early access, and pre-order players have noted a new locked difficulty setting even more challenging than Realism. This new mode, known as YOLO (You Only Live Once), requires players to complete the entire campaign with only one life—dying at any point sends them back to the beginning.
A few players, including reports on Reddit, have successfully completed the game on this difficulty. One notable player, Lost-Equivalent2352, shared their experience of finishing the campaign in 20 hours, emphasizing a strategy that involved a lot of hiding and letting AI teammates engage enemies while they moved in to finish off any remaining foes. They utilized flashbangs to stun opponents and grenades to clear enemy clusters.
The difficulty escalated during a nighttime mission portraying the chaos of a North Korean invasion of South Korea. Here, the presence of civilians and allies on the battlefield complicated the use of explosives, leading Lost-Equivalent2352 to credit their eventual success to “pure luck.”
Playing with a mouse and keyboard, Lost-Equivalent2352 commented, “I think that [it’s] impossible to complete it with a controller, you need [good] recoil control in long distances but that’s only my opinion.”
According to them, hand-to-hand combat sections in the campaign were particularly challenging since a missed counter could end the fight and, subsequently, the entire run. During these encounters, players are limited exclusively to unarmed attacks.
To unlock the YOLO difficulty, players must first complete the entire campaign on Realism, which is itself a significant challenge. The YOLO mode can end for various reasons resulting in a game over screen, such as accidentally harming civilians or failing jumps. Any such errors will cause a reset back to the opening cutscene.
It is worth noting that players cannot select individual missions for YOLO difficulty like they can with other settings; the game must be completed as intended. However, the reward for accomplishing this feat—a Calling Card for multiplayer—might seem lackluster, as it ranks among the lower-tier cosmetic rewards in Call of Duty, likely to go unnoticed by most players unless they know how it was obtained.
Looking ahead, Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ early access kicks off later today, while the full game, featuring traditional multiplayer modes, launches on Friday, October 23, for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch 2.
