BioWare Closes Its Doors, Fallout Felt Across the Gaming Industry
- BioWare has closed, resulting in the loss of jobs and deep industry sympathy.
- Former employees and game developers pay tribute to BioWare’s legacy.
- EA announces consolidation and layoffs affecting multiple studios.
In a shocking development, BioWare announced its closure last night, prompting widespread sympathy from the gaming community for affected employees and marking the end of one of the most influential RPG developers in history.
Reactions have poured in from former BioWare staff, who shared fond memories and gratitude for their time at the studio, as well as support from peers in the industry. David Gaider, the former lead writer of Dragon Age, expressed his sadness on Bluesky, stating, “As much as it’s not really a surprise… the news today still made me sad … BioWare joins other great studios of the past, with a legacy that will not soon be forgotten.”
James Ohlen, a previous lead on Knights of the Old Republic and Dragon Age, paid his respects, writing, “BioWare is closing. My 22 years there made me the man I am. The people affected today are some of the best RPG developers in the world. If you’re hiring writers, designers, artists or engineers, start with them.”
Casey Hudson, the former general manager of BioWare and lead on the Mass Effect franchise, added, “This is sad news on multiple fronts for those of us who worked there… Its legacy will live on through those who were part of it and continue to create games through a passion for unforgettable stories, worlds and characters.”
Mark Darrah, former executive producer for Dragon Age and Anthem, pointed out that “BioWare is 100% owned by EA,” emphasizing that EA controls all the IPs, including Dragon Age and Mass Effect. He speculated on the future of these franchises, noting that it may lead to EA selling them off or burying them in their vault.
Trick Weekes, a former narrative designer at BioWare, honored the studio by posting a poignant video from Mass Effect 3’s Citadel DLC, where Commander Shepard bids farewell. Actor Mark Meer also shared his condolences with BioWare staff.
Michael Gamble, who was a project director on the now-canceled Mass Effect 5, thanked supporters for his 17 years at BioWare, saying it “has meant everything to me.”
Notable figures outside of BioWare have also shared their grief. Swen Vincke, CEO of Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios, remarked, “Larian and Bioware started their trajectories in the games industry at the same time and Bioware led the way in making RPGs big.” He expressed his disbelief that BioWare’s name would no longer accompany discussions about upcoming RPGs.
Michal Nowakowski from CD Projekt Red reflected on BioWare’s significance to their studio’s history, recounting their collaborations and the invaluable support BioWare provided in the early days. He lamented, “Very sad for the people affected, but also sad to see a legendary brand go down. Not a great day in the games industry.”
Paweł Sasko, associate director at CD Projekt, attributed his inspiration to BioWare’s games, stating, “Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2 shaped my imagination and the desire to create games. I would have never been here without BioWare igniting the fire in my heart.”
Dave Gilbert, founder of Wadjet Eye Games, echoed similar sentiments, declaring, “I can’t think of a studio that has had a bigger influence on me than this one… I’ll never stop feeling angry when studios with tremendous legacies just get bought and killed off for parts.”
Warren Spector, a noted developer in the immersive sim genre, criticized the corporate decisions leading to the studio’s closure, stating, “BioWare is more than just another studio… They, for many years, as effectively as any studio, married art and commerce.” He called the situation “utter bullshit” and demanded accountability for those responsible.
In conjunction with BioWare’s closure, EA announced major restructuring that will result in approximately 400 job cuts across the company. While EA did not specify the other studios affected, early reports indicate that studios including Respawn, Maxis, Full Circle, EA Motive, and Ripple Effect may also face layoffs. This comes after EA was acquired by a consortium that includes Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund for $55 billion earlier this year.
Eurogamer extends its best wishes to all individuals impacted by the layoffs, as the industry comes to grips with the loss of a storied studio.
