Masahiro Sakurai Warns of Generative AI’s Impact on Game Development

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • Masahiro Sakurai expresses concerns about generative AI leading to unoriginal video games.
  • In 2023, over 19,000 games were released on Steam, a dramatic increase since 2010.
  • Sakurai emphasizes the irreplaceable nature of human creativity in game design.

Masahiro Sakurai has addressed the challenges posed by generative AI in the realm of game development. He argues that while AI technology is likely to lead to an influx of unoriginal video games, it cannot replicate the unique creativity displayed by influential designers like Fumito Ueda, known for his work on Ico.

In a recent interview with Denfaminicogamer, Sakurai reflected on his tenure as a judge for the Game Designers Awards, a role he recently stepped down from. He noted the dramatic rise in the volume of game releases over the years; in 2010, only 275 games were published on Steam, while more than 19,000 were released in 2023.

“19,000 is amazing, but I think that number will increase even more from now on,” Sakurai stated. He expressed confidence that AI will contribute to this growth but cautioned that many of these new titles will likely be “unprofitable” and difficult to keep track of. “There are too many to keep track of, and it’s impossible to understand them all,” he added.

Sakurai further explained that games generated by AI or mass-produced with low quality often end up being mere reproductions of existing game systems. He cited the recent release of Librarian: Tidy Up the Arcane Library!, a game that tasks players with organizing books as an example of a simple premise that is easy for AI to replicate. He referenced similar puzzle games, suggesting that these concepts would also be easily produced by AI.

For instance, Needle in a Haystack Simulator gained popularity due to its humorous premise of finding a needle among five million pieces of hay. The game’s success led to numerous imitations, which prompted the developer, Studio Bitdot, to label their game as the “original” to distinguish it from the copies.

Sakurai acknowledged that generative AI might advance to the point where it could imitate more complex games, such as Ueda’s acclaimed titles like Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. However, he asserted that Ueda’s future creations will possess a uniqueness that AI cannot replicate, stating, “What kind of artistic style will his future works possess? That’s something only he can create. I think that’s where human creativity lies.”

He elaborated that while AI can reference existing creations, it lacks the ability to conceptualize new ideas. “Basically, AI refers to things that have been created so far, but it can’t refer to things that haven’t been created before,” Sakurai explained. He emphasized the growing importance of individuals who can create unique and innovative works in a landscape increasingly dominated by mass production and lower-quality games.

The rise of quickly produced AI games has become noticeable in the gaming industry. For instance, Valve’s current Steam Next Fest features over twice the number of demos compared to the previous year, partly due to the surge of “AI slop.” This influx has led some indie developers to withdraw planned demos and playtests, fearing that their original games might be copied by AI before their official release.
