CD Projekt Red Signals Multiplayer Interest for Cyberpunk 2
- CD Projekt Red’s job listing hints at multiplayer exploration for Cyberpunk 2.
- The studio seeks a lead quest programmer with expertise in multiplayer network architecture.
- Past efforts for Cyberpunk 2077’s multiplayer were shelved; future plans are under consideration.
CD Projekt Red is potentially reviving its online ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise, as evidenced by a recent job listing for a lead quest programmer for the upcoming Cyberpunk 2. The listing specifically requests candidates to have an “understanding of multiplayer network architecture and client-server synchronization for game state/quests,” according to the site Cheap Happens.
While the inclusion of multiplayer expertise does not guarantee that Cyberpunk 2 will feature co-op or other online modes, it indicates that CD Projekt Red is exploring these possibilities. This is a notable shift, considering that Cyberpunk 2077 was initially set to include multiplayer features after its launch; however, development challenges led to those plans being postponed in favor of stabilizing the base game.
Cyberpunk 2077’s senior quest designer, Philipp Weber, previously stated that CD Projekt Red aims to integrate online elements across all its franchises, as part of a strategy to create technology that would seamlessly enhance future games. In 2024, CD Projekt’s CEO Adam Badowski mentioned that the team was “considering” multiplayer aspects for Cyberpunk 2 during the game’s early concept stages.
As details about the forthcoming sequel remain sparse, CD Projekt Red continues to keep fans of the series engaged with ongoing updates for Cyberpunk 2077. Recently, the game received a new update coinciding with the launch of Cyberpunk Edgerunners Season 2 on Netflix, introducing features such as dual-wielding and cross-platform mods to the game, now six years old.
