Infinity Ward Updates Possum Mechanic in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Patch
- Infinity Ward addresses community concerns regarding the Possum mechanic in DMZ mode.
- Changes now prevent Possum activation if the killing team is nearby and within four minutes of the player’s death.
- The latest patch includes weapon balance adjustments and the introduction of the Shipment map.
Since the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ mode, players have raised two main discussions: the necessity of a PvE-only mode and the role of the Possum ability in extraction gameplay. In response, Infinity Ward has implemented significant changes in the latest patch.
Released overnight, the patch modifies Possum, the mechanic that allows players to revive from a fully dead state, by restricting its activation. Players can no longer use Possum while the team that eliminated them is in proximity, nor can they activate it if they have been dead for less than four minutes. These changes are aimed at addressing prevalent player concerns while leaving room for potential future adjustments, including tweaks to the mechanic’s range and duration.
The Purpose of the Possum ability is to allow a player to respawn instead of forfeiting the match entirely, despite losing their loot. According to Infinity Ward, “The intention for Possum is to give a high level operator a second chance.” The developer noted that in its previous form, Possum was being utilized more as a combat tool than a means of survival.
Infinity Ward stated, “These tweaks are meant to prevent players from getting right back into the fight which they had just lost. We will be watching the use of Possum with this change to see if it has the desired effect.”
In addition to the DMZ updates, the October 28th patch also includes weapon balance changes, featuring buffs for assault rifles and SMGs, alongside nerfs to the APOC-338 and FiNN LMGs. This balance is particularly significant following earlier nerfs aimed at increasing the time-to-kill (TTK) effect exhibited during the Modern Warfare 4 beta.
Furthermore, the patch resolves multiple bugs reported by players in both multiplayer and DMZ modes, and introduces the Shipment map with a 24/7 playlist. Eurogamer’s comprehensive review of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is expected to be published later today.
