PCE Inflation Report for September 2026: What Shocking Shift Has Everyone Talking?

Date:

Inflation Surges in September as Economic Growth Exceeds Expectations

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • September’s inflation rate reached 3.6%, above the Federal Reserve’s target.
  • The GDP increased at a 3.4% annual pace in Q3, surpassing estimates.
  • Consumer spending rose 0.5%, slightly below forecasts, while layoffs remain low.

The pace of price increases accelerated in September, placing inflation significantly above the Federal Reserve’s target, as indicated in reports from the Commerce Department on Thursday. The personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index climbed a seasonally adjusted 0.5% for the month, raising the annual inflation rate to 3.6%. This monthly rise matched the Dow Jones consensus, while the annual figure was 0.1 percentage point lower.

Core PCE, which excludes food and energy, reported increases of 0.3% and 3.1%, aligning with expectations. The Federal Reserve typically regards the core reading as a clearer indicator of long-term inflation trends.

Despite inflation remaining above the Fed’s 2% target, the Commerce Department also disclosed robust gross domestic product (GDP) growth in the third quarter. The GDP rose at a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 3.4%, exceeding the 3.1% forecast and significantly higher than the 2.2% growth recorded in the second quarter.

Consumer spending proved relatively strong, increasing by 0.5%, though slightly below the anticipated 0.6% gain. Personal income grew by 0.2%, compared to a forecast of 0.3%. These reports were released just after the Fed’s decision to maintain its benchmark interest rate in a range between 3.75% and 4%. Despite persistent inflation, officials are inclined to evaluate incoming data before making further decisions.

“The period right in front of us is information rich. There is a lot that’s happening in the world. My colleagues and I are keen to take notice of it,” Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh commented.

Additionally, data from the Labor Department showed that layoffs remained low, with initial jobless claims falling to a seasonally adjusted 194,000 for the week ending October 24, lower than the projected 200,000 and close to levels last observed in the late 1960s.

Following these reports, stock market futures declined, alongside a drop in Treasury yields. Economic growth has been attributed to elevated investment linked to the artificial intelligence sector, along with high consumer and government spending.

In the third quarter, consumer spending maintained a rise of 3.8%, matching the previous period’s rate. Gross private domestic investment surged by 19.4%, spurred by a 20.9% increase in equipment spending and an 8.4% rise in intellectual property products. Real sales to private domestic purchasers, a metric utilized by Fed officials to gauge underlying demand, increased by 4.9%, compared to a 4.6% rise in the second quarter.

Interestingly, quarterly PCE prices showed some optimism: PCE rose by 2.1% overall and 2.5% for core, down from 5% and 3.3% in the second quarter, respectively.

The surge in September’s prices was primarily driven by a notable increase in energy costs. Gasoline and energy goods saw a rise of 9.2% for the month, while energy services overall increased by 5.4%. Prices for services excluding energy and housing rose by 0.4%, while housing costs increased by 0.3%.
