Nexus Mods Introduces New AI Disclosure Guidelines for Mod Creators
- Nexus Mods has rolled out new guidelines requiring mod authors to disclose AI usage in their creations.
- The platform will not ban AI-generated mods but mandates transparency on how AI is utilized in mod development.
- Existing mod authors have 60 days to comply with the new disclosure requirements.
Nexus Mods, the largest website dedicated to finding and downloading PC mods, has announced new guidelines aimed at properly identifying mods that were either created entirely using generative AI or developed with AI assistance. In a blog post, the platform outlined its updated policies, clarifying that a ban on AI-generated mods is not in place. Instead, mod authors are now required to disclose the use of AI in their submissions and specify the manner in which AI was applied. A site feature has been introduced enabling users to filter out mods utilizing AI.
Site co-owner Foledinho acknowledged the potential controversy surrounding the decision to not implement a blanket ban on AI. He noted that while the site is “pro-human creativity,” establishing a clear distinction between acceptable and unacceptable practices is challenging. He stated, “An outright ban will not eliminate AI from the modding process but will prevent people from mentioning its use.” Foledinho emphasized the importance of transparency, advocating for clear labeling and regulation of AI use on the platform.
These new guidelines apply to mods created entirely with AI, as long as this is disclosed by the authors. The blog post further clarified that AI-generated mods will not be removed from the platform provided they satisfy specific criteria related to permissions, transparency, presentation, and conduct. Authors of existing mods have a 60-day window to review their works and ensure they align with the new disclosure requirements. Concurrently, updates to the site’s user interface are expected to enhance the visibility of AI tags on mod pages.
Foledinho expressed skepticism about the likelihood of widespread compliance, stating, “While we hope these changes will encourage everyone to disclose their AI usage, to be honest, that’s not going to happen.” The platform is also instituting clear moderation standards with enforceable consequences for violating the rules.
The influx of AI-assisted mods has raised additional issues, particularly regarding the remixing and modification of other authors’ work, often done without permission. Nexus Mods is currently developing new permission options that will address AI usage and training, as well as forks and derivative mods. Notably, the site has committed to refraining from using mods to train AI or to sell or license mods for that purpose.
Another complex issue involves AI-generated and AI-assisted thumbnails, which vary from entirely created images to original shots enhanced with AI tools. The post indicated that no new regulations for these cases are being introduced at the moment, acknowledging them as “grey zones.” However, the conversation around this topic remains ongoing.
Foledinho concluded by acknowledging the need for further clarification regarding existing licenses, forks, and how permissions apply to different mod versions, stating, “We want to get this right, and not rush through changes that could cause more problems further down the line.” He indicated that while these improvements may take longer to implement, the guidelines represent a significant first step in navigating AI-related challenges.
In related news, indie game platform itch.io was compelled to expand its AI disclosure filter as ‘AI slop’ began to inundate the site. Additionally, Valve faced scrutiny over a perceived lack of curation surrounding AI-developed titles during the recent Steam Next Fest, prompting public calls for more action from the company.
