Market Movements: Significant Premarket Trading Reactions Following Elections

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • Trump Media shares fell 11% after Democratic victories in the U.S. midterms.
  • Tesla’s and SpaceX’s stocks dropped nearly 6% and over 7%, respectively.
  • Duolingo’s shares surged 18% after strong quarterly revenue results.

In premarket trading, several companies experienced significant stock movements following the outcome of the U.S. midterm elections. Trump Media & Technology Group, the company owned by President Donald Trump, saw its shares decline by 11%. Trump, who holds a 41% stake in the firm, is linked to the social media platform Truth Social. The Democratic control of Congress presents challenges to the president’s policies.

Tesla and SpaceX also faced stock drops, with Tesla shares down nearly 6% and SpaceX’s falling over 7%. These declines coincided with the Democrats taking control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, which positions newly elected officials to influence the rapid build-outs of data centers critical to both companies, particularly in states like Texas, Tennessee, and Mississippi.

Stocks associated with neocloud companies experienced declines as well, including CoreWeave, which fell 7%, Iren at 6%, and Nebius down about 5%. The Democratic wins in Texas, alongside voter rejections of proposed data centers nationwide, are anticipated to pose challenges for these firms.

In contrast, Novo Nordisk reported a 6% rise in its shares after announcing earnings of 5.79 Danish kroner (approximately 63 cents) per share, surpassing Wall Street’s expectation of 5.10 kroner (55 cents). The firm also raised its fiscal outlook for 2026 based on anticipated growth in GLP-1 product sales.

CVS Health’s shares fell over 2% following the announcement of plans to split into two distinct publicly traded companies by early 2028, a move that would undo its previous $78 billion acquisition of Aetna and separate its retail pharmacy division.

McDonald’s reported mixed quarterly results that resulted in a 2% gain in its shares. The fast-food chain exceeded adjusted earnings expectations at $3.57 per share, higher than the anticipated $3.38 but fell short on revenue, reporting $7.16 billion against a consensus estimate of $7.29 billion.

Duolingo’s shares surged 18% after reporting third-quarter revenue of $309 million, exceeding projections of $303 million. The number of monthly active users reached 153 million, surpassing a forecast of 149 million.

Alight, an employee benefits consultancy, rose by 22% after lifting its outlook for full-year 2026 revenues to between $2.115 billion and $2.125 billion, compared to the FactSet consensus of $2.09 billion.

Avis Budget Group’s shares slid approximately 2% despite reporting a revenue of $3.44 billion and earnings of $5.15 per share, which represented a sharp decline from $10.11 per share in the same quarter a year prior.

Skyworks Solutions fell roughly 11% after disappointing guidance for the current quarter, predicting adjusted earnings of about $1.25 per share and revenue between $1.80 billion to $1.90 billion, below estimates.

Super Micro Computer’s shares increased by 2% after reporting earnings and revenue that surpassed Wall Street expectations, with projected net sales for fiscal year 2027 set between $72 billion and $82 billion.

Arista Networks gained 4%, raising its fourth-quarter earnings forecast to between $1.26 and $1.30 per share on revenues of $3.9 billion to $4.0 billion, outperforming analyst expectations.

Block, a fintech company, experienced a 9% stock increase after its earnings report surpassed expectations and it raised guidance for the full year ending in December.

Conversely, Freshworks saw its shares decrease by about 10%, despite delivering stronger-than-expected third-quarter results of 22 cents per share on $245.4 million in revenue.

Renewable energy stocks climbed following the Democratic sweep, with firms like Sunrun, Nextpower, and Plug Power reporting gains of around 6% each, while Canadian Solar increased by 7% and First Solar by nearly 8%.

Amdocs’ shares fell 37% as it warned that 2027 revenue could drop by as much as 18% due to ongoing disputes with T-Mobile and reduced discretionary spending by the telecom giant.

Datadog’s stock also took a hit, sinking 17% despite beating expectations for third-quarter earnings, as its revenue guidance fell short of consensus.

Kraft Heinz shares rose 3% after announcing plans to sell its North America coffee business while reporting adjusted earnings of 53 cents per share on revenue of $6.12 billion, exceeding analysts’ predictions.
