Following the release of a brief teaser trailer for The Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel, speculation about the game’s story has taken off within the fan community. The teaser, part of Bethesda’s 40th anniversary celebrations, featured minimal visuals, beginning with a shot of desert sand and revealing the subtitle ‘Sentinel’ before concluding with a cryptic quote.
The quote reads: “The scroll offered only a shimmer, a veil thinly lifted to my eyes. A future lost. A victory undone. Sands of time scattered by fate.” This is attributed to Yazar, a Moth Priest of High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell, with some fans speculating on the significance of the date mentioned: 4E 206.
A Reddit user, 04nc1n9, proposed that “Sentinel” likely takes place five or more years after the events of Skyrim, highlighting that Hammerfell remains a monarchy post-imperial secession and has a Moth Priest, despite them generally being linked to the Empire. The user noted, “Hammerfell’s monarch has access to an Elder Scroll after the Elder Scrolls scattered.”
The mention of Moth Priests in relation to Hammerfell has led to theories about the Thalmor potentially serving as primary antagonists in the upcoming title. Reddit user Jonesketi commented, “[It’s] likely the Thalmor being the antagonists with so little time having passed,” suggesting their knowledge of the Elder Scrolls may have prompted Hammerfell’s preparations.
The vague nature of the teaser’s quote has further inspired speculation about previously defeated forces in the series, particularly with the phrase “a victory undone,” leading fans to consider the concept of a Dragon Break—an event allowing multiple occurrences within the timeline. Such mechanisms have been previously utilized to explain various endings in the series.
User Wafelze linked the idea of “undone” events to Numidium, a mechanical golem that caused a Dragon Break upon its activation in The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall, stating, “With how important time is to Skyrim’s story, it wouldn’t surprise me if this story is about time being entirely broken.”
Other theories delve into the creation mythology of Nirn and Lorkhan, with a user suggesting that the elves may attempt to revert to their original ancestry and undo the creation of the divines. Meanwhile, notions of alternate histories mirror concepts from the novel ‘Man in the High Castle,’ with possibilities such as a rewritten history where the Thalmor gained power or Hammerfell facing subjugation, while receiving glimpses of a victorious timeline.
With the launch of Sentinel reportedly still years away, the latest teaser—only the second official look at the game announced over eight years ago—has ignited considerable interest among fans eager for information about the next installment in the Elder Scrolls franchise.
