Kyō Yoneshiro to Launch New Manga Adaptation of Junichirō Tanizaki’s Classic Novel ‘Naomi’ on August 3
Manga creator Kyō Yoneshiro is set to launch a brand-new series titled Netsuzō: Chijin no Ai (Fabrication: A Fool’s Love) in the upcoming 36th issue of Shogakukan’s Weekly Big Comic Spirits magazine, hitting shelves on August 3. Based on Junichirō Tanizaki’s iconic 1924 novel Chijin no Ai—widely known in English as Naomi—the project adapts a timeless literary classic for a modern audience.
A Twisted Tale of Ambition and Obsession
Tanizaki’s original novel chronicles the psychological dynamics between Joji Kawai, an ordinary salaryman, and Naomi, a stunning 15-year-old cafe waitress. After striking an agreement to cohabitate “like friends” while Joji provides her with an elite education and lessons in manners fit for a future wife, Naomi evolves into an unpredictable force that completely upends Joji’s expectations. Originally serialized in the Osaka Asahi Shimbun a century ago, the celebrated story has previously inspired multiple film adaptations across decades.
