Australian Hiker Found Dead on Wyoming Trail During 3,100-Mile Journey

Authorities reported that a 28-year-old Australian hiker attempting a 3,100-mile trip across five states was found dead on a Wyoming hiking trail on Wednesday. William Standish was thru-hiking the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail along the Rocky Mountains from Canada to Mexico, a continuous long-distance journey designed to be completed from start to finish.

Challenging Landscapes Along the Continental Divide

The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail traverses Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico, taking five to seven months to complete according to the Continental Divide Trail Coalition. The coalition’s planning guide describes the route as one of the most challenging landscapes in North America, requiring meticulous planning, starts between mid-June and early July, and navigation around immediate snow on Glacier National Park passes.

Investigation Into Fatal Fall and Remote Terrain

After visiting Yellowstone National Park, Mr. Standish explored a remote trail system between Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park. Teton County Search and Rescue noted that evidence suggests he may have fallen from a steep, high-altitude ridgeline. Teton County Sheriff Matt Carr estimated that the hiker fell 250 to 300 feet, while the Teton County Coroner’s Office stated that the official cause of death remains pending.

Search Operations and Official Statements

Mr. Standish’s family filed a missing persons report in Australia on Monday after failing to hear from him for four days, prompting authorities to contact Yellowstone and Grand Teton officials. Teton County Search and Rescue obtained tracking data from a device that pinged his last known location, deployed a helicopter team to the coordinates, spotted a bright orange backpack from the air, and located his body. Sheriff Carr described Mr. Standish on Friday as a very experienced hiker who kept up a good pace, carried the right supplies, and was “doing everything right.”
