Why Prosecutors Are Suddenly Dropping Charges Against Ex-Olympian David Hearn

Federal Prosecutors Move to Drop Charges Against Former Olympian Over Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Damage

Federal prosecutors have moved to drop charges against 67-year-old David Hearn, a former U.S. Olympic canoeist who was accused of vandalizing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Mr. Hearn had pleaded not guilty this month to a charge of destruction of property, and his trial was previously scheduled to begin on Sept. 28. He was the only person known to be facing a felony charge rather than a misdemeanor among a group of seven individuals.

Flawed Contractor Installation Cited in D.C. Superior Court Motion

In a court filing submitted to D.C. Superior Court on Friday, Washington U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro stated that her office received documents proving the damage to the landmark was caused by a flawed installation. The filing attributed the structural issues to the contractor, Atlantic Industrial Coatings, and noted a rush to finish the project before the America 250 celebration events held on July 4.

Presidential Sabotage Claims and Outstanding Charges for Other Defendants

The case originated from what President Trump had previously claimed, without evidence, were deliberate efforts to sabotage his administration’s renovation of the pool. While prosecutors have moved to dismiss the case against Mr. Hearn after acknowledging that the contractor had “botched” the renovation, it remains unclear whether the vandalism-related charges against the remaining six co-defendants will also be immediately dismissed.

Ongoing Legal Status and Developing Case Updates

As the legal proceedings unfold regarding the faulty renovation work performed by the Trump administration-hired contractor, the status of the broader prosecution involving the other defendants continues to be evaluated. This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
