Million-Dollar Payout Announced for Anti-Abortion Activist Prior to Senate Vote on Todd Blanche’s Nomination
Two days before Senate lawmakers were scheduled to vote on advancing Todd Blanche’s nomination to serve as attorney general, a million-dollar payout was announced for Paul Vaughn, an anti-abortion activist convicted by a Tennessee jury in 2024 of conspiring to prevent access to an abortion clinic. Mr. Vaughn, whom President Trump pardoned last year, will receive a seven-figure settlement handled through an alternative avenue by the Justice Department, which has managed civil compensation claims since 1870 via public lawsuits or private forms sent directly to the department.
Senate Sticking Points and Judicial Scrutiny Over Settlement Funds
The settlement highlights how the goals of a $1.8 billion fund announced in May by the Justice Department can continue despite a public retreat by Mr. Blanche, providing an existing avenue to assuage skeptical Republicans while fulfilling President Trump’s desire to compensate individuals he believes were wronged. This continuing payout capability remains a sticking point between the administration and Republican senators as they weigh Mr. Blanche’s nomination, where a single “no” vote by a Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee could stall or sink the appointment, drawing the loudest concerns from Senator John Cornyn of Texas.
Judicial Pushback and Rebukes Over Blanche’s Management Style
Federal judges have repeatedly singled out Mr. Blanche by name regarding prosecutorial missteps and his direct control over politically fraught cases since he became the No. 2 Justice Department official in March 2025. In Florida, Federal District Judge Kathleen M. Williams wrote that Mr. Blanche’s answers to the Senate about the fund were misleading and disingenuous, while in Virginia, Judge Leonie M. Brinkema left alive a lawsuit seeking to dismantle the fund because Mr. Blanche and the Justice Department refused to file an affidavit under penalty of perjury promising not to operate or create such a payout mechanism in any manner.
Dismissed Cases and Subpoenas Linked to Justice Department Actions
Mr. Blanche’s direct involvement in high-profile cases has also led judges to dismiss actions and quash subpoenas, such as a human smuggling case against Salvadoran immigrant Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia dismissed in May by Judge Waverly D. Crenshaw Jr., who found a tainted investigation used to give the department cover for returning Mr. Abrego Garcia to the United States. Additionally, in Minnesota, Judge Patrick J. Schiltz quashed grand jury subpoenas directed at elected officials after ruling they were part of a broader campaign by the administration to pressure political adversaries and retaliate against the president’s critics following aggressive public statements by Mr. Blanche against local leaders.
