Teen Lifeguard Rescues Young Boy From Hazardous Surf at Santa Cruz Beach
A teenage lifeguard successfully pulled, dragged, and lifted a young boy to safety from the crashing waves of Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz, Calif., over the weekend. The child, who was knocked down by a wave and swept about 15 yards offshore at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, was brought ashore without serious injuries and released to his parents.
Bystanders and Video Capture Dramatic Ocean Rescue
A video of the incident captured bystanders rushing into the surf to help as violent waves repeatedly pulled the lifeguard and the boy underwater. Claps broke out when the lifeguard, aided by another person, finally reached the shore. Scott Vander Dussen, who recorded the footage, stated that thunderous wave booms initially drew his attention to the drifting boy, prompting him to alert nearby personnel before realizing a rescue was already underway.
National Weather Service Warns of Dangerous Pacific Coast Conditions
The rescue occurred on a day when the National Weather Service issued warnings for elevated surf, rip currents, and sneaker waves—fast-moving walls of water reaching up to 10 feet along the San Francisco Bay Area’s Pacific Coast. Amid these hazardous conditions, lifeguards with California State Parks’ Santa Cruz District performed a total of 34 rescues over the weekend.
Official Praise and Calls to Elevate Lifeguard Status
Tom Gill, president of the United States Lifesaving Association and a 30-year Virginia Beach lifeguard veteran, praised the teenager’s calm demeanor and execution of a rescue utilizing little to no equipment. The viral footage also drew attention from President Trump, who stated on X that he wanted to honor the lifeguard at the White House as “very brave.” Wyatt Werneth, a spokesman for the American Lifeguard Association, expressed hope that the recognition would help elevate lifeguards to the official status of first responders.
