Why Mandela Barnes Just Walked Away From The Wisconsin Governor’s Race

Mandela Barnes Abandons Wisconsin Gubernatorial Bid as Francesca Hong Dominates Democratic Primary Polls

Former Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes officially withdrew from the Democratic gubernatorial primary on Thursday, pointing to State Representative Francesca Hong’s commanding position in the race. In an online statement, Barnes acknowledged that it had become clear who the party’s eventual nominee would be, following months of struggling to build momentum in a crowded and fractious field despite his high name recognition.

Democratic Socialist Platform Energizes Younger Voters While Stirring Moderate Concerns

Hong’s campaign has driven a surge in voter enthusiasm across Wisconsin in recent weeks, drawing younger demographics to campaign events with a progressive platform. Her policy proposals include permitting local governments to implement income taxes on high earners and enacting a moratorium on new data center constructions. However, these positions have triggered anxiety among some moderate Democrats regarding electability in the general election, particularly given Wisconsin’s status as a politically divided state where Republicans and Democrats are evenly matched.

Shifting Alignments and Campaign Troubles Shape the Crowded Primary Field

The primary landscape has experienced significant volatility leading up to the Aug. 11 election, with Governor Tony Evers opting against a third term and leaving an open seat. The establishment wing of the party initially gravitated toward Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez this month, but her campaign unraveled due to reporting issues with campaign finance documents, prompting her withdrawal. Following her exit, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley re-entered the race after previously suspending his campaign over low polling figures, securing an endorsement from Governor Evers rather than Barnes, his former governing partner.

Marquette Law School Poll Underscores Hong’s Command as General Election Looms

A Marquette Law School survey released this week illustrated Hong’s substantial lead, placing her at 46 percent of the vote—25 points ahead of Barnes before his departure, with Crowley trailing in a distant third. With the primary scheduled for August 11, Hong continues to navigate remaining opposition while Representative Tom Tiffany is anticipated to secure the Republican nomination for the general election.
