Pro-Trump Right-Wing Influencers See Declining Audiences Amid Political Shifts
During Donald J. Trump’s 2024 re-election campaign, right-wing podcasters like Benny Johnson accumulated tens of millions of views on YouTube by discussing divisive cultural issues and criticizing Democrats. However, recent data indicates that views for Mr. Johnson’s YouTube channel have dropped by millions, and his engagement on X has slowed significantly. Similar downturns affect other prominent figures; Dan Bongino, a podcaster and former F.B.I. deputy director, has experienced a reduction of about half in his livestream views compared to their 2024 peak, while Megyn Kelly has struggled to sustain moments of explosive growth.
Analysis of Audience Data Across Platforms
To evaluate the changing influence of online political commentators, The New York Times examined several years of audience metrics across podcasts, YouTube, X, and Rumble for a dozen creators, including Tucker Carlson, Steven Crowder, Matt Walsh, Candace Owens, Stephen K. Bannon, Nicholas Fuentes, Ben Shapiro, Tim Pool, and the late Charlie Kirk. While mainstream news outlets and numerous conservative websites like The Blaze and The Federalist face traffic drops, individual creators have experienced varied fortunes. Ben Shapiro lost approximately 60,000 YouTube subscribers between April and June, with weekly views dropping from 27 million in 2024 to about four million, though his podcast downloads climbed due to a 50 percent increase in published content. Meanwhile, creators like Candace Owens saw surges during controversies surrounding Charlie Kirk’s assassination and subsequent conspiracy theories, even as she expanded her reach beyond Mr. Trump’s base.
Factors Contributing to the Shift in Viewership
Experts attribute the changing landscape to several elements, including the challenges of generating political outrage while Republicans control Washington, a quieter midterm season, and algorithmic adjustments on platforms like X. Additionally, newer influencers such as Clavicular and Asmongold have drawn away viewers by combining political commentary with topics like gaming and relationships. ideological rifts among right-wing commentators have also deepened, particularly following Mr. Trump’s decision to initiate a war with Iran, which divided loyal supporters from those growing critical of the administration. While staunch allies like Mr. Shapiro support the president and the war, figures such as Nicholas Fuentes—who publishes exclusively on Rumble—have seen average weekly views climb from one million in 2024 to as high as eight million during his vocal criticism of the administration.
Future Implications for Conservative Media and Campaigns
The shifting audience dynamics threaten to complicate messaging for Republican candidates who have traditionally relied on a unified network of digital creators to mobilize voters. Although some influencers point to ongoing successes on alternative platforms like TikTok and Instagram—such as Matt Walsh and Ben Shapiro—industry observers note that the overall decline in traditional streaming metrics reflects a broader evolution in online media consumption. Media analysts suggest that disaffected figures adopting investigative and narrative-driven approaches, such as Ms. Owens and Mr. Fuentes, may wield increasing influence in the future of right-wing digital content as traditional partisan outrage struggles to connect with audiences the way it did in prior election cycles.
