India Secures Semifinal Spot Against Italy with 4-1 Victory Over Wales

In a decisive match at the FIH Women’s World Cup qualifiers held in Hyderabad, India triumphed over Wales with a score of 4-1, ensuring their advancement to the semifinals against Italy. This victory solidified India’s position at the top of Pool B, ahead of Scotland, who earlier defeated Uruguay.

The match was highlighted by a stunning performance from Navneet Kaur, who scored a hat-trick. Indian forward Sakshi Rana initiated the scoring with a remarkable goal in the first quarter, receiving a pass on the right side of the circle and executing a low reverse hit that left Welsh goalkeeper Amy Hughes with no chance.

India dominated the initial 35 minutes but struggled to maintain their momentum for the full 60 minutes. Coach Sjoerd Marijne had previously emphasized the need for improvement in converting opportunities, a concern that remained unaddressed during the match.

Following Rana’s opening goal, Navneet Kaur found the net twice through penalty corners in the second and third quarters. In her first attempt, the ball deflected off Hughes’ pad and rolled into the goal; her second attempt was a powerful strike into the bottom right corner, which left the goalkeeper with no possibility of a save.

Wales managed to score midway through the third quarter, with Betsan Thomas capitalizing on a defensive error by Udita and slotting a well-placed shot past Indian goalkeeper Bichu Devi. Soon after, Wales had an opportunity to narrow the deficit further through a penalty stroke taken by captain Elizabeth Bingham, which she failed to convert.

Shortly after, Navneet sealed the match by scoring a penalty stroke of her own, completing her hat-trick and solidifying India’s victory. The Indian team is set to face Italy in the semifinal on Friday evening.
