MI London Eliminated Despite Victory Over Birmingham Phoenix

MI London, aiming for their fourth consecutive title, saw their hopes extinguished as they defeated bottom-placed Birmingham Phoenix by just two runs in a tense final group match at Edgbaston. The match coincided with a solar eclipse, adding an unusual backdrop to the day’s proceedings.

Needing to win by at least 59 runs to leapfrog SunRisers Leeds for a playoff spot, MI London started with a total of 157 for 6. They knew that to progress, they needed to restrict Phoenix to 98 runs. Early success in the powerplay saw them claim three wickets, with Sikandar Raza bowling Joe Clarke and Richard Gleeson securing consecutive dismissals of Mitchell Owen and Laurie Evans, solidifying his status as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 14 wickets.

However, a crucial partnership between Joe Weatherley and Sean Dickson temporarily steadied Birmingham Phoenix. A wide from Tom Curran took Phoenix to 99 runs, dashing MI London’s slim hopes. Dickson fell to Sam Curran for 23 runs off 17 balls, and Weatherley, who scored 42 off 31, was caught in the deep, further stalling their momentum. Despite this, Jordan Thompson (23* from 13) and Rehan Ahmed (23 from 11) pushed close to the target, but Trent Boult’s impressive death bowling ultimately sealed the victory for MI London.

Earlier in the match, Will Jacks provided a strong start but fell to Chris Wood after slicing to deep point. Nicholas Pooran’s aggressive innings, which included 36 runs off 21 balls, halted when he holed out to long-off. Jason Roy also contributed 26 off 21 before becoming Rehan’s second wicket, with the leg-spinner finishing with remarkable figures of 2 for 7 from just 15 balls.

Despite useful contributions from Raza (17 from 13), debutant Ollie Sykes (23* off 14), and Tom Curran (17* off 9), MI London’s total was not enough to secure their desired outcome. With the reigning champions now eliminated from the competition, attention shifts to the upcoming match between SunRisers Leeds and Manchester Super Giants, scheduled for Friday evening at the Kia Oval, with a spot in the Lord’s final against Trent Rockets on the line.
