Sindhu Falls Short in Semifinal at Malaysia Open, Eyes Future Opportunities
PV Sindhu’s first tournament of 2026 concluded with a straight-games semifinal loss at the Malaysia Open Super 1000. The unseeded Indian player, returning from a three-month injury layoff, faced off against world No. 2 Wang Zhi Yi of China, losing 16-21, 15-21 in a highly competitive match that lasted 52 minutes.
Despite the loss, this was Sindhu’s first semifinal appearance on the BWF Tour in 14 months, marking a significant step in her comeback. She reached this stage after world No. 3 Akane Yamaguchi retired mid-match in the quarterfinals. The match against Wang showcased Sindhu’s resilience, yet also highlighted the recurring issue of unforced errors at crucial moments.
Sindhu initially looked sharp, managing to stay in longer rallies and displaying her attacking prowess. However, she lost her momentum after leading 11-6 in the second game. A series of mistakes allowed Wang to level the score, eventually allowing the Chinese player to take control with an impressive streak of 11 points out of 13.
Reflecting on the pivotal moment, Sindhu admitted, “I think 11-6 maybe I should have taken two three points there… Even though I was leading, the rallies between 6 to 11, there were small errors and long rallies. In a match, if you are leading you can’t expect to win easily… I should have maintained the lead.” Nonetheless, she noted the positive aspects of her performance, stating, “Starting the season with a really good performance gives me a lot of confidence and motivation as well especially after coming back from injury.”
Sindhu, ranked 18th in the world coming into the season, is expected to rise to world No. 12 by next week. Her journey through this tournament included a fightback against Sung Shuo Yun, winning 21-13, 22-20, followed by a dominant victory over eighth seed Tomoka Miyazaki with a score of 21-8, 21-13. Her quarterfinal opponent Yamaguchi withdrew after losing the first game 21-11.
As she looks forward, Sindhu is slated to participate in the Indian Open next week. “This was a good tournament for me and it’s important to rest now and get going for the India Open. I hope I do well there,” she expressed. The competition will pose challenges, especially given her unseeded status, including a potential second-round matchup with Wang.
As Sindhu prepares for a crucial season that includes the Asian Games and a World Championship in New Delhi, her on-court fitness and performance levels are promising signs for fans and supporters. Though the semifinal loss may be disappointing, her return to form is an encouraging development as she embarks on the next phase of her career.
