India Draws FIH Pro League Match Against Spain, Loses in Shootout 4-3
In a frustrating turn of events for the Indian men’s hockey team, they drew their FIH Pro League match against Spain 1-1, ultimately losing the shootout 4-3 in Hobart on February 24, 2026. India appeared poised for their first win of the season after leading 1-0 until just 90 seconds before the end of regulation, when Spain equalized, securing a shootout opportunity and a bonus point.
Maninder Singh opened the scoring for India in the 19th minute with a powerful reverse hit, having received the ball from Hardik Singh. Despite Spain’s strong offensive start, marked by better ball control and chances, India’s defense held firm to maintain a goalless first period. Goalkeeper Suraj Karkera played a pivotal role, making several crucial saves throughout the match.
Spain continued to dominate possession after halftime but failed to find the back of the net. India had opportunities in the final quarter, including a disallowed goal from Mandeep Singh following an infringement during a setup play by Yashdeep Siwach. With time running out, Spain’s Bruno Font equalized in the 59th minute, skillfully maneuvering and finishing from the right side.
In the closing seconds, Spain was awarded two penalty corners but were thwarted by India’s defense, with Karkera making a final save to keep the score level. In the ensuing shootout, Shilanand Lakra, Jordi Bonastre, Maninder Singh, and Marc Recasens successfully converted their chances. However, Abhishek’s missed attempt gave Spain a vital edge, despite Pol Cabre Verdiell and Raj Kumar Pal scoring for Spain and Hardik Singh missing twice, including a retake opportunity after being fouled by Spain’s goalkeeper, Luis Calzado.
This match marks India’s second consecutive draw and shootout loss, following a previous 2-2 tie against Australia. The team will face the hosts, Australia, again on Wednesday as they continue in the league.
