Indian Badminton Stars Face Tough Draws as Season Kicks Off at Malaysia Open Super 1000

As the 2026 badminton season commences with the Malaysia Open Super 1000, Indian players look to rebound from a disappointing 2025, where they failed to secure major titles despite some notable performances. This year’s tournament is crucial, particularly ahead of the Asian Games and the upcoming World Championships hosted in India.

The tournament begins on Tuesday, featuring all of India’s leading badminton athletes, albeit with only one seed across five disciplines, making the competition particularly challenging. PV Sindhu returns from a foot injury, while Lakshya Sen aims to continue his winning momentum after clinching the Australian Open 500 title at the end of 2025. Third seeds Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also hope to build on their recent semifinal finish at the BWF World Tour Finals.

Women’s Singles

PV Sindhu, ranked 18th in the world, faces Chinese Taipei’s Sung Shuo Yun in her opening match, with a 2-0 head-to-head advantage. If successful, she will likely meet eighth seed Tomoka Miyazaki, an opponent she has beaten before. Her quarter also features Akane Yamaguchi, providing a potential challenge should she advance.

Returning from a lengthy injury hiatus, Malvika Bansod, currently ranked 50th, faces a formidable opponent in seventh seed Ratchanok Intanon. Bansod has yet to defeat Intanon in three previous encounters. Unnati Hooda, another young talent, has withdrawn from the tournament after facing fourth seed Chen Yu Fei.

Men’s Singles

The men’s singles draw presents significant challenges, featuring only two Indian players. Lakshya Sen, the top-ranked Indian, competes against Singapore’s Jia Heng Jason The in a first-time meeting. A victory may lead him to a clash with sixth seed Christo Popov or world number one Shi Yu Qi, presenting a tough path ahead.

Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde face second seeds Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin, while Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh take on Phuwanat Horbanluekit and Benyapa Aimsaard.
