India Ends Losing Streak but Falls to Australia in Pro League Shootout

In their latest match in the FIH Pro League, India ended a five-match losing streak, securing their first points of the season, but ultimately succumbed to Australia in a shootout, losing 5-4 after a 2-2 draw in regulation time. Australia remains unbeaten in the league.

Prior to the match, Head Coach Craig Fulton emphasized the need for his players to improve possession and manage transitions effectively. For three quarters, the Indian team responded well, particularly in defense, showcasing a strong performance. However, the final quarter saw them overwhelmed by Australian aggression.

India took the lead late in the first quarter when Raj Kumar Pal won a penalty corner by hitting the ball into Australian captain Jeremy Hayward’s foot. Amit Rohidas converted it with a powerful slap shot into the bottom corner, leaving goalkeeper Jed Snowden unable to move.

Australia nearly equalized just before halftime, when Cam Geddes circumvented CB Poovanna and crossed the ball, which was deflected in by Jugraj Singh. However, India successfully challenged the decision, with the TV Umpire ruling that Geddes had obstructed Poovanna.

India doubled their lead at the end of the third quarter, with Mandeep Singh winning a penalty corner after Tim Howard pushed him. Jugraj Singh capitalized with a low dragflick to Snowden’s right, which seemed to set India on course for a victory.

The fourth quarter marked a comeback for Australia, beginning with Joel Rintala’s dragflick that left Indian goalkeeper HS Mohit with no chance. Rintala followed up with another dragflick four minutes before the end of the match after a disputed penalty corner decision.

In the shootout, nine consecutive successful conversions led to a tense conclusion, where Jed Snowden ultimately saved Aditya Lalage’s shot, providing Australia with the critical bonus point.
