Indian Men’s Hockey Team Suffers Four Consecutive Losses in FIH Pro League

The Indian men’s hockey team faced a challenging start to their FIH Pro League campaign in Rourkela, enduring four defeats while conceding 19 goals and scoring just five. The season commenced with a 1-3 loss to Belgium, followed by a significant 0-8 defeat to Argentina, another 2-4 loss to Belgium, and a repeat 2-4 loss against Argentina. With the World Cup approaching soon in the Netherlands and Belgium, in addition to the Asian Games, these results are concerning.

Although the Pro League serves as a platform for top teams to prepare for major tournaments and allows coaches to refine strategies, the Indian team’s performance was subpar, especially given the presence of experienced players. Defensive issues played a pivotal role in the team’s struggles, and the problems extended beyond individual defenders.

Head coach Craig Fulton emphasized a “defend to attack” philosophy, necessitating all players to contribute defensively. Misplaced passes, poor positioning, ineffective tackles, and missed opportunities from penalty corners were evident throughout the matches. Senior players such as Harmanpreet Singh, Amit Rohidas, Jugraj Singh, Suraj Karkera, Jarmanpreet Singh, Hardik Singh, and Vivek Sagar Prasad were part of these errors despite their experience.

Key moments could have altered the outcomes; for instance, Harmanpreet missed a crucial penalty stroke when the score was 0-0 against Argentina in their opening match, which soon led to Argentina taking the lead. Similarly, an opening goal by Aditya Lalage against Belgium was disallowed due to a build-up infringement, and Belgium capitalized on that to score four unanswered goals.

Concerns Over Harmanpreet’s Form

Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh’s recent performance raised eyebrows, as he struggled with his usual defensive and offensive roles, lacking effectiveness in his dragflicks and positioning. Fulton noted after the loss to Argentina that Harmanpreet was not performing at his best. Previously, he was recovering from an injury sustained in the Hockey India League, which may have impacted his contributions.

Critics began to question whether Fulton should have rested Harmanpreet, especially considering the performance of players like Amandeep Lakra, who excelled in the Hockey India League with nine goals from penalty corners but played only one match in this series.

Fulton’s Future Under Scrutiny

With 19 goals conceded and four defeats, head coach Fulton faces mounting criticism regarding his team selection and tactical decisions—a recurring theme in his coaching tenure. While he has previously led India to victories, including a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics and gold at the Asian Games, questions about his strategies persist as the team struggles.

Despite the scrutiny, historical precedent suggests that removing coaches prematurely is typical in Indian hockey. Thus, sacking Fulton at this juncture may not be prudent, especially with upcoming matches in Hobart, where the team will need to demonstrate improvement under his coaching methodology.
