Lakshya Sen Wins BWF Australian Open Super 500, Secures First Title of 2025

In a strong finish to a challenging season, Lakshya Sen claimed his first title of 2025 by winning the BWF Australian Open Super 500. The 24-year-old Indian defeated unseeded Yushi Tanaka 21-15, 21-11 in just 38 minutes, showcasing significant improvements in his gameplay.

Sen’s performance highlighted his ability to mix shot speed and placement, delivering sharper attacks and demonstrating deft skills at the net. Following the match, he emphasized his mental focus: “In the second set, I was quite far off in the lead, but I didn’t want to get too inside my head so I wouldn’t relax too much. In the back of my mind, it was there but I was just trying to focus on playing one point at a time.”

This victory comes as a much-needed confidence boost for Sen, who struggled with consistency throughout the year. Despite a record of 23 wins and 18 losses on the BWF Tour, including ten first-round exits, ending the season with a title signifies a positive step forward.

His journey to the final included a grueling semifinal against world No. 6 Chou Tien Chen, where he triumphed after 86 minutes, saving three match points. His coach Vimal Kumar revealed that Sen was battling a fever the night before this match, making the victory even more commendable.

The Australian Open presented a challenging landscape, with long matches against Chu Yu Jen and compatriot Ayush Shetty leading up to the final. While the tournament may not have featured the strongest field, Sen’s ability to navigate through its challenges reflects his development as a player.

Looking back at 2025, Sen’s record includes significant moments such as reaching the semifinals at the Japan Masters and the final at the Hong Kong Open. However, he also faced setbacks, including a mid-season back injury that affected his physicality and performance. His drop in rankings resulted in tougher draws, complicating his path throughout the year.

Following the match in Sydney, Sen reflected on his journey: “I have seen a lot of ups and downs this season… but I kept my hard work going throughout the season and I am very happy to end the season on a good note.” Ending the year with a title provides a much-needed uplift for both Sen and Indian badminton in a year with limited success.
