Stunning Twist: Jemimah Rodrigues Out of Asia Cup and Games—What’s Behind Pratika Rawal’s Surprise Call-Up?

Date:

Jemimah Rodrigues Out of Women’s T20 Asia Cup and Asian Games Due to Injury

Jemimah Rodrigues has been sidelined from both the Women’s T20 Asia Cup, set to take place in the UAE later this month, and the Asian Games in Japan next month due to a hamstring injury. Pratika Rawal will replace Rodrigues in the Asia Cup squad, marking her first call-up to the T20 international team.

Rawal recently recovered from an injury that had previously kept her out of the Lord’s Test last month. She was also slated to join Warwickshire for the One-Day Cup. It is notable that Rawal has not participated in a T20 match since the Challenger Trophy in November 2024, where she scored 142 runs at a strike rate of 111.81. She is yet to make her Women’s Premier League (WPL) debut, as an ankle injury sustained during the ODI World Cup last year thwarted her opportunity to play for UP Warriorz.

In the selection for the Asia Cup, Rawal was favored over Anushka Sharma and Harleen Deol, both of whom have previous T20I experience. Additionally, the squad will be without Shreyanka Patil, who has been ruled out due to an ankle ligament injury. Her spot has been retained by legspinner Prema Rawat.

G Kamalini, selected as the backup wicketkeeper for Richa Ghosh in place of Yastika Bhatia for the Asian Games, will also be part of the Asia Cup lineup. The tournament will kick off on August 28, with India’s first match against Thailand scheduled for August 30. Other competitors in their group include Pakistan and Hong Kong. India will face Pakistan on September 5, with all matches to be held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The tournament will conclude with the final on September 13.
