Worcestershire Defeats Durham by 77 Runs in Metro Bank One Day Cup

Worcestershire triumphed over Durham by 77 runs in a tense final group match at New Road, securing their place in the quarter-finals of the Metro Bank One Day Cup. Tom Taylor’s explosive innings of 86 helped Worcestershire post a competitive total of 291, while Kasey Aldridge’s impressive bowling figures of 3 for 18 played a crucial role in their victory.

Durham started strong, with Ben McKinney scoring 82 runs off just 70 balls, but a collapse in the middle order shifted the momentum. Aldridge and Ollie Robinson formed a vital lower-order partnership that kept Durham in the contest, ultimately proving to be key for their qualification despite their defeat.

The match began dramatically, with Luke Robinson dismissing Brett D’Oliviera on the second ball, catching the ball off his own bowling. Although Matthew Waite provided Worcestershire with a momentary boost by scoring 39 runs off 25 balls, his innings ended when he edged a delivery from Ben Stokes.

Callum Parkinson then took the third Durham wicket, sending Isaac Mohammad back to the pavilion. Worcestershire faced trouble when Kashif Ali was run out, leaving them struggling at 89 for 4. Jake Libby mounted a brief recovery, scoring 46, but his dismissal by Zafar Ghafari triggered a further downturn.

However, a match-altering partnership of 90 runs between Taylor and Ben Allison shifted the tide back to Worcestershire. Taylor’s aggressive 86 runs, inclusive of 11 boundaries, revitalized their innings just before both he and Allison, who scored valuable runs, fell to Aldridge.

Chasing 292, Durham initially kept pace, with McKinney rushing to a 50 in just 39 balls, hitting six fours and two sixes. However, as wickets fell, including those of prominent players like David Bedingham and Stokes, Durham’s challenge began to falter.

The decisive wicket came from concussion substitute Ben Gibbon, who claimed McKinney’s wicket as he edged a delivery behind after a solid innings. A stabilizing 54-run partnership between Aldridge and Robinson kept the team alive, but their dismissals at 29 and 43 left Durham at a precarious 199 for 8.

In a nervy climax, Waite’s wicket of Ghafari brought Worcestershire a glimmer of hope for an unlikely qualification. However, a determined last-wicket partnership between Robinson and Parkinson ultimately guided Durham through to the quarter-finals.
