Sunrisers Leeds Defeat Manchester Super Giants by 41 Runs to Secure Play-Off Spot

In a decisive encounter at Emirates Old Trafford, Sunrisers Leeds defeated Manchester Super Giants by 41 runs, securing their place in the play-offs against Southern Brave at The Kia Oval on Friday. The Sunrisers scored 166 for 4, setting the highest total in the women’s Hundred at the venue, led by an impressive performance from Australian player Sutherland.

Sutherland scored 62 not out off 36 balls and also took 2 for 17 with the ball, while contributing two catches to her team’s successful effort. “We had to win, and it was nice to do a job for the team,” Sutherland said. “They came off to a pretty hot start. We knew they were going to come really hard, and that was the message to the group, to stay calm.”

After being asked to bat, Phoebe Litchfield made an explosive start, scoring 27 runs off just 12 deliveries, propelling her to the top of the competition’s run-scoring charts. Her innings ended when she miscued a delivery from Mady Villiers. Bryony Smith and Lauren Winfield-Hill added 17 and 20 runs, respectively, contributing to a solid start.

Smith was dismissed by Villiers, and Winfield-Hill was run out in a mix-up, leaving Sunrisers at 83 for 3. Sutherland then took control, assisted by Dani Gibson’s quick 24 off 13 balls. Following Gibson’s dismissal with 12 balls remaining, Sutherland’s explosive finishing, including three consecutive sixes off Ryana MacDonald-Gay, helped Sunrisers to a final total of 166.

The Super Giants began their chase strongly but soon faced setbacks. Jess Jonassen took a crucial wicket, dismissing Smriti Mandhana for 28. Grave Scrivens struck six fours in her 31-run innings, but her exit — stumped by Winfield-Hill off Sutherland — was indicative of the mounting pressure.

Despite efforts from players such as Richa Ghosh and Kathryn Bryce, who made 15 before retiring out, the Super Giants struggled. Meg Lanning could only manage 10 runs as Jonassen claimed her third wicket, ultimately finishing the innings with the Super Giants at 125 for 8.

Following this impressive win, the Sunrisers are on a four-match winning streak and aim to defend the title they won last year as Northern Superchargers.
