Mikel Arteta Surprised by Summer Transfer Market’s Record Deals

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed astonishment at the significant financial activity in this summer’s transfer market, where four players have been transferred for over £100 million ($136 million). The record deal to date is Yan Diomande’s £120 million move from Red Bull Leipzig to Real Madrid.

Following Diomande is Morgan Rogers, who Arsenal had been in discussions to acquire but ultimately missed out after refusing to meet Aston Villa’s valuation. Chelsea swiftly negotiated a £117 million agreement for the player. Additionally, Elliot Anderson’s £116 million transfer from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City and Sandro Tonali’s £100 million move from Newcastle to Tottenham highlight the market’s volatility, with 18 days still remaining in the transfer window.

Asked if these substantial transfers surprised him, Arteta stated, “Yes it has, yeah. I wouldn’t bet on that to be fair. But that’s the market; that means that there are clubs that are happy to invest or they believe the valuations of players are that, and that’s fair.” He added, “At the end, the value of the player is what somebody can pay for you. They’ve done it so that’s the value and it is the right one.” He acknowledged the mutual satisfaction of buying and selling clubs in the transfer process.

Arsenal is actively pursuing its own transfer targets, including potential signings for Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa and Bayer Leverkusen’s Jarell Quansah. The Gunners are preparing for their upcoming Community Shield match against Manchester City, where Arteta confirmed that Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, and Martín Zubimendi could be in contention based on their training performance after returning late from the World Cup.

This upcoming match will mark Manchester City’s first without Pep Guardiola, who stepped down after a decade in charge. Arteta, who previously worked under Guardiola for three years, paid tribute to both Guardiola and his successor, Enzo Maresca. “Probably I’m going to fall short on the way I can praise what he’s done,” Arteta commented. “I think he has opened a different way of understanding the game, elevating the Premier League to a different level.” He labeled Guardiola as “the best coach in the history of football for many reasons,” acknowledging the significant impact he had on the league.

Arteta expressed gratitude for his time with Guardiola, noting how his coaching approach has elevated standards across the league. “I think a word of gratitude, first of all personally, for the time that I had with him. It was incredible,” he said. He also expressed confidence in Maresca, citing his character and knowledge as key attributes that will contribute to his success at Manchester City.
