Rachel Hollis Faces Backlash for Comments on Privilege

Rachel Hollis, author of “Girl, Wash Your Face,” has come under fire after discussing her house cleaner in a now-deleted social media post. In a clip resurfaced by Angie Treasure, Hollis recalled a moment from an April 2021 livestream in which she was called “privileged AF” after sharing that she employs someone twice a week to clean her toilets. In response, Hollis acknowledged her privilege but emphasized her hard work in achieving financial stability.

During the livestream, Hollis remarked, “You’re right. I’m super freaking privileged, but also I worked my ass off to have the money to have someone come twice a week and clean my toilets.” The conversation escalated when a commenter labeled her as “unrelatable.” Hollis defended her position, expressing her lack of interest in being relatable. She pointed out that influential figures like Harriet Tubman, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Marie Curie, and Oprah Winfrey are “all unrelatable AF.”

Following the backlash, Hollis issued an apology via Instagram, articulating, “I know I’ve caused tremendous pain in mentioning prominent women—including several women of color—whose struggles and achievements I can’t possibly understand.” She acknowledged that she overlooked the challenges faced by those who cannot attain financial security due to systemic racism and biases. Hollis concluded her apology by stating, “The important thing for me to do now, something I should have already done, is honestly, be quiet and listen.”
