Southern Brave Defeats Trent Rockets by Six Wickets, Ending Their Six-Match Winning Streak

Southern Brave triumphed over Trent Rockets by six wickets, halting the latter’s six-match winning streak and denying them automatic qualification for the Hundred Final on Sunday. At Trent Bridge, Tristan Stubbs and Marcus Stoinis spearheaded the Brave’s victory with impactful performances, with Stubbs scoring an unbeaten 52 runs off 28 balls.

The Rockets were aware that a victory would secure their top placement and a spot in the final at Lord’s. However, Stubbs clinched the match with a six off Lewis Gregory to reach his half-century, coming with just three balls remaining in the game. This result allows Sunrisers Leeds the opportunity to surpass the Rockets on net run-rate if they defeat Manchester Super Giants in their upcoming match.

A crucial fourth-wicket partnership of 70 runs from 41 deliveries between Stubbs and Stoinis, who contributed 46 runs off 25 balls, proved decisive in a contest that remained closely contested throughout. The Brave began their innings steadily, with Jamie Smith (26 off 18) and Moeen Ali (17 off 14) guiding them to 40 runs without loss after just 25 balls. However, Craig Overton broke the deadlock by dismissing Smith with a remarkable relay catch from Finn Allen and Calvin Harrison.

Harrison then took Moeen’s wicket on his fourth delivery and followed up by bowling out David Miller. Stoinis entered the game at this point and quickly made his presence felt, hitting Harrison for two sixes and a four in his first three balls. Stoinis was eventually caught at extra-cover by Ben Sanderson after misplaying a slower delivery, but at that stage, the Brave appeared well-positioned to secure the win.

Batting first, the Trent Rockets had posted a total of 158 runs for 5. Key contributions came from Ben Duckett (17 off 14), Finn Allen (23 off 12), and Aneurin Donald (19 off 9). However, the innings gained potency thanks to the sixth-wicket stand of 66 runs in 39 balls between Mitch Santner and Lewis Gregory, who scored 35 not out off 23 balls and 28 not out off 18 balls, respectively.

Reflecting on the Brave’s season, Stubbs, the Meerkat Match Hero, commented, “It’s been disappointing but it’s a nice way to finish off. In hindsight, it’s a bit frustrating. We gave it our all for the month, but in the first three games, we lost a couple of close ones and then it’s hard to get momentum. I think we’ve shown at the end what we can do, but it took us a while to get there.”
