Writer Launches Cost-Effective AI Model Palmyra X6 to Address Rising Deployment Expenses
As organizations increasingly grapple with the high costs of AI deployments, Writer has introduced a new flagship model, Palmyra X6, designed to alleviate financial burdens for its users. Unveiled on Thursday, this model is a post-training adaptation of Z.ai’s open-source model GLM-5.2 and promises to deliver deployment-ready capabilities at reduced expenses. Writer estimates that the new model, along with enhancements to its infrastructure, may lower costs for basic tasks by up to 50%.
In conjunction with Palmyra X6, Writer has also launched substantial upgrades to its standard agentic harness, which will be accessible to clients starting Thursday. CEO May Habib remarked, “I think the enterprise is absolutely sick of chasing the next benchmark. They want flattening cost, and it seems like nobody can deliver that.”
The new system particularly focuses on efficiently executing complex, multi-step tasks with reduced token usage. Writer emphasizes that optimizing its harness is pivotal in driving this efficiency. Recent research conducted by Writer’s team supports this approach, revealing that improving harness efficiency can be a more reliable method of cost reduction than merely changing the model, showcasing an average cost decrease of 40% across various tests.
“The harness is the one component whose efficiency multiplies across every model an organization runs—present and future,” the researchers stated. For Writer’s clients, the experience remains model-agnostic, meaning Palmyra X6 can function alongside other Writer models or external models integrated via Azure or Amazon Bedrock.
However, Habib notes a growing skepticism towards major AI labs, attributing it to their financial motivations in promoting increased token use. “The cost explosion here is just unprecedented for customers, and so is the degree to which CIOs are giving up on the labs,” she explained, further asserting that these labs “don’t deeply understand right how to help an enterprise get benefit from AI.”
