India Elects to Bat First Against Sri Lanka in Galle Test

In a notable decision, Shubman Gill won his third toss in nine matches as captain and opted to bat first in the Test match against Sri Lanka at Galle. The pitch, with its even grass covering and absence of dry patches, was anticipated to provide less assistance to bowlers compared to typical conditions. Early moisture was expected to offer some seam movement before settling into a more favorable batting surface.

India made a change to their lineup, replacing the injured B Sai Sudharsan with left-handed batter Devdutt Padikkal at the No. 3 position. The team composition included three left-arm spinners and two fast bowlers, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, aligning with pre-match expectations.

Sri Lanka brought in a surprise debutant, 25-year-old offspinner Keshara Nuwantha, who replaced Ramesh Mendis. Nishan Fernando filled the void left by injured opener Pathum Nissanka, while Niroshan Dickwella returned to Test cricket after a three-year absence.

This match marks the 50th Test held in Galle and India’s milestone 600th Test appearance overall. Both teams are currently positioned in the middle of the standings and must achieve a clean sweep in the series to maintain a realistic chance of qualifying for the World Test Championship final.
