Sony has acquired the movie rights to ‘Mouthwashing,’ a highly successful independent horror video game released in 2024. The acquisition was reported by Deadline, stating that the rights were obtained from developer Wrong Organ and publisher Critical Reflex.
Karyn Kusama, recognized for her acclaimed work on the television series ‘Yellowjackets,’ has been brought on board to direct the adaptation. Additionally, writers Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay have been enlisted for the project, with production support from Crooked Highway, known for the film series ‘The Black Phone’ featuring Ethan Hawke.
Details regarding the cast for the film adaptation have yet to be announced, and it remains unclear whether the movie will adhere closely to the game’s storyline.
‘Mouthwashing’ has been a commercially successful title, selling over 500,000 copies on PC by February 2025, with the game launching on consoles recently.
The adaptation of ‘Mouthwashing’ is positioned similarly to the film ‘Iron Lung,’ produced by Mark Fischbach (known as Markiplier) and his company Markiplier Studios, which garnered $21 million globally shortly after its release. This connection raises intriguing questions about how ‘Mouthwashing’ will translate to the big screen.
As discussions around the film progress, a central inquiry remains whether it will faithfully follow the game’s narrative and how audiences will respond to the casting choices for key characters like Swansea and Jimmy.
