Durham Edges Essex by 20 Runs in Metro Bank One-Day Cup Clash

Durham boosted their prospects of advancing to the knockout rounds of the Metro Bank One-Day Cup with a 20-run victory over Essex at Darlington. This win comes after England Test opener Emilio Gay was ruled out as a precaution due to a shoulder injury sustained in Durham’s previous game against Middlesex.

In a rain-shortened, 38-over match, Durham set a total of 229 for 5. Colin Ackermann stood out with an unbeaten 80 runs, while Ben Stokes contributed a brisk 43 off just 27 deliveries. Kasey Aldridge’s bowling unit then defended this total, with James Minto taking three wickets for 45 runs, despite a valiant 76 from Essex’s Noah Thain.

Durham’s next challenge will be against Worcestershire at New Road on Tuesday, where a win could secure their qualification. Conversely, this defeat leaves Essex unable to progress further in the tournament.

The match was initially delayed by rain until 12:45, but the 2,000-strong sell-out crowd were entertained from the outset. Durham faced early setbacks as Alex Lees fell for a duck on his third ball, caught at second slip off Jamie Porter. Soon after, they found themselves struggling at 30 for 3 by the seventh over, with Ollie Robinson and Will Rhodes dismissed cheaply.

Stokes ignited the innings with five fours and two sixes before being controversially caught behind off Simon Harmer, which he contested. Following his dismissal, Durham was at 87 for 4 in the 13th over. David Bedingham managed to score 38 runs before being leg-before to Mackenzie Jones. However, Ackermann and Aldridge steadied the innings with an unbroken partnership of 103 runs in 16 overs, with Aldridge finishing off with 35 not out.

Essex’s response began poorly when Luc Benkenstein was caught at cover for 9 off Duanne Olivier. Despite Tom Westley’s 17 and Thain’s solid performance, which saw him reach over 500 runs in this year’s 50-over competition, the chase became increasingly difficult. Thain’s dismissal at a crucial moment, as he attempted a quick second run, was a turning point, leaving Essex at 110 for 4.

Harmer and Simon Fernandes added 47 runs together before Harmer fell lbw to Ghafari for 32. Essex faced considerable pressure, needing 62 runs from the final six overs, which soon escalated to 50 off four. Zaman Akhter was dismissed by Minto, and Jones hit two sixes in the penultimate over but ultimately fell to Minto, solidifying Durham’s victory.
