Nasa’s “Big Bang” Effort Extends Voyager 2’s Scientific Mission
NASA engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory have successfully implemented a power-saving initiative dubbed “Big Bang” to optimize energy usage aboard Voyager 2. This nearly 50-year-old spacecraft will be able to continue its scientific work for a longer duration as a result.
Both Voyager 2 and its twin, Voyager 1, depend on radioisotope thermoelectric generators that produce electricity from the heat of decaying plutonium. As these plutonium supplies decrease, each spacecraft loses approximately 4 watts of available power annually. After nearly five decades in space, the power resources available to the Voyagers are severely limited.
In response to these dwindling power levels, mission controllers have progressively shut down non-essential systems to maintain functionality. As of 2024, the team had already deactivated two science instruments on each Voyager spacecraft, out of a total of ten instruments per craft. Some instruments had been previously turned off after their planetary encounters were completed.
The “Big Bang” initiative was crucial; without it, the Voyager team would have had to disable another instrument aboard Voyager 2 by the end of 2026. The newly generated power is projected to sustain the operation of Voyager 2’s remaining three instruments for at least another year.
Nasa plans to employ the same energy-saving measures for Voyager 1, which is currently farther from Earth than Voyager 2. The mission team anticipates completing this work in the upcoming months.
