Fusion Power: Startups Attracting Investment as Technology Advances
In recent years, fusion power has transformed from a long-standing promise—often dismissed as being “a decade away”—into a viable technology that has attracted significant investment. The technology still presents challenges and high construction costs, but it holds the potential to harness the nuclear reactions that power the sun, promising nearly limitless energy on Earth and the capacity to disrupt trillion-dollar markets if commercial viability is achieved.
The current surge in the fusion sector is attributed to advancements in three key areas: more powerful computer chips, sophisticated artificial intelligence, and high-temperature superconducting magnets. These innovations have contributed to improved reactor designs, enhanced simulations, and sophisticated control mechanisms.
A pivotal moment occurred at the end of 2022 when a U.S. Department of Energy laboratory announced it had achieved a controlled fusion reaction that produced more energy than the lasers used in the experiment. This milestone, known as scientific breakeven, demonstrated that the underlying scientific principles are sound, although commercial breakeven—where the energy produced exceeds the total energy consumption of the facility—remains a goal for the industry.
Leading Startups in Fusion Technology
Following this momentum, several startups are leading the charge in the fusion energy landscape, having raised over $100 million from private investors, according to data from FusionX.
Commonwealth Fusion Systems
Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has secured about one-third of all private capital in the fusion sector, totaling approximately $3.94 billion, including a recent $1 billion round in July. CFS is focusing on building its unique power plant named Sparc, which is designed to reach scientific breakeven by 2027. The tokamak-based reactor will employ superconducting magnets developed in collaboration with MIT. Plans are in place for a commercial power plant, Arc, predicted to produce 400 megawatts of electricity near Richmond, Virginia, with Google as a planned buyer of half its output.
Helion
Helion, based in Everett, Washington, aims to produce electricity by 2028, targeting Microsoft as its initial customer. Using a field-reversed configuration reactor, Helion has raised $3.2 billion in total, with its latest $465 million round valuing the company at $15.5 billion. The reactor design involves spinning plasma into doughnut shapes and inducing fusion through high-speed collisions.
TAE Technologies
Founded in 1998, TAE Technologies has announced plans to merge with Trump Media & Technology Group, resulting in a combined valuation of $6 billion. The company specializes in a distinct approach to fusion involving bombardment of plasma with particle beams. Prior to the merger announcement, TAE had raised a total of $1.65 billion.
Pacific Fusion
Pacific Fusion gained attention by raising over $1 billion in its Series A funding. The startup plans to use coordinated electromagnetic pulses for inertial confinement fusion rather than lasers. The funding structure involves milestone-based tranches, indicating a careful approach to capital deployment.
Proxima Fusion
Raising over $682.9 million, Proxima Fusion is engaged in using stellarator designs, which promise longer plasma stability than tokamaks. The company’s valuation reached $2.7 billion in its latest funding round, with plans to develop both a net-energy demonstrator and a commercial power plant by the early 2030s.
Other Notable Startups
Several other startups are also making strides in the fusion sector:
- Shine Technologies has raised $1 billion, focusing on commercial isotope production while developing future reactor capabilities.
- Inertia Enterprises, with a founding team linked to the National Ignition Facility, has secured $450 million in its Series A funding.
- General Fusion has raised $442 million and is working with a liquid metal approach to fusion.
- Zap Energy is exploring both fusion and fission energy generation and has raised $325 million.
- Focused Energy and Marvel Fusion are also notable players, raising significant investments to develop their respective fusion technologies.
