Malawi’s Women’s Team Makes Historic Run to WAFCON Final Against Cameroon

Malawi’s women’s national football team has captivated the sport’s world with an extraordinary performance in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), culminating in a final against Cameroon. Regardless of the outcome of the match, their journey is being hailed as one of the most remarkable in the history of international tournaments.

This marks Malawi’s debut at a major tournament, entering the competition as the 153rd-ranked team in the world. The Scorchers were considered the underdogs from the outset, facing formidable opponents steeped in football history, including ten-time champions Nigeria, while having no prior WAFCON experience.

Historically, the men’s national team has only participated in the Africa Cup of Nations on three occasions, winning just two matches. This backdrop highlights the significance of the women’s team’s achievement, as they are not entering as a traditional football powerhouse.

Malawi’s FIFA ranking is also telling; they have never broken into the top 100 and previously peaked at 110. Beginning the tournament ranked 32nd in Africa, they are positioned below teams like Sierra Leone and Mongolia. The team had never qualified for a major tournament before, with their best result being a win in the regional COSAFA Cup in 2023.

Facing Nigeria in their opening match was a daunting task, yet the Scorchers surprised many by defeating the reigning champions 3-2. The match showcased the formidable duo of the Chawinga sisters, Temwa and Tabitha, who each scored crucial goals, demonstrating a resilience that would define their tournament.

Following the shocking victory over Nigeria, Malawi went on to defeat Egypt 3-1 and secured their place in the knockout stage even after a 2-1 defeat to Zambia. Tabitha’s decisive goal proved vital in determining their advancement to the quarterfinals as group winners.

In the quarterfinals against Ghana, the Scorchers displayed their fighting spirit again, coming from behind to win 2-1, earning them a spot in the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time. They followed this by overcoming Algeria 3-1 in the semifinals, positioning themselves for the historic final in Rabat.

Malawi’s coach, Lovemore Fazili, noted the significance of their achievement: “I have been in this coaching career for a long time and have achieved a lot, but reaching the WAFCON final is something extraordinary for me.” The last women’s team to reach a final in their debut continental appearance was South Africa in 1995.

The Scorchers’ exceptional performance has marked them as one of the tournament’s highest-scoring teams, averaging 2.4 goals per game, far surpassing other competitors. Their exciting style of play, underpinned by the talents of players like Rose Kadzere and Faith Chinzimu, has made them both entertainers and underdogs in this prestigious event.

As the final against Cameroon approaches, coach Fazili expressed hopes for victory, reiterating the pride in their journey thus far: “I’ll be happy, I’ll be happy. Nothing else. I’ll be celebrating. That’s our nation…and they’re happy.” For Malawi, reaching this final is not just about the title; it’s a celebration of their unprecedented journey and a historic milestone in women’s football.
