A Black Hole Devoured a “Super Sun,” but an Astonishing Mystery May Still Linger!

Massive Star Torn Apart by Black Hole in Unprecedented Cosmic Event

A massive star has been spectacularly ripped apart and gradually consumed by a black hole, an event scientists likened to “preparing a snack for lunch.” This extraordinary encounter was unveiled at the American Astronomical Society (AAS) conference in Phoenix, Arizona, where researchers described the star as being “torn up” by the black hole’s immense gravitational force.

Leading the research, Associate Professor of Astrophysics Daniel Perley from Liverpool John Moores University presented findings documented in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. He stated, “We discovered what we think is a black hole merging with a massive companion star, shredding it into a disk that feeds the black hole. It’s a rare and awe-inspiring phenomenon.” The destruction marked one of the most powerful cosmic events ever recorded, with energy released reaching an estimated 400 billion times that of the Sun, surpassing even the most powerful supernovae known to astronomers.

Identification of the Event

The object in question, designated AT2024wpp and affectionately nicknamed the Whippet, was identified shortly after its light reached Earth. Anna Ho, an assistant professor of astronomy at Cornell University and coauthor on the paper, detected the remarkable event using the Zwicky Transient Facility at Palomar Observatory in California.

Initially suspected to be a Luminous Fast Blue Optical Transient (LFBOT), a type of visible cosmic event related to star destruction, the phenomenon was confirmed with subsequent observations from the Liverpool Telescope in the Canary Islands and NASA’s Swift satellite. The data indicated that it exhibited characteristics typical of an LFBOT, including an extremely blue appearance and X-ray production.

Measurements from coauthors R. Michael Rich at UCLA and Yu Jing Qin at Caltech showed that AT2024wpp was emitting energy far exceeding that of an ordinary supernova. This data, coupled with its exceptional temperature, led researchers to conclude that they were observing the disintegration and ingestion of a star by a black hole. Perley remarked, “Even though we suspected what it was, it was still extraordinary. This was many times more energetic than any similar event and more than any known explosion powered by the collapse of a star.”

Shock Wave Impact

Further analysis suggested that the event produced a powerful shock wave, which traveled outward through surrounding gas at one-fifth the speed of light. However, after approximately six months, this shock wave appeared to “fizzle out.”

The material pulled from the star formed a disk around the black hole, generating intense heat as it spiraled inward. This process produced X-ray radiation and a significant outflow of gas. The collision of this outflow with material previously expelled by the star resulted in bright blue optical and ultraviolet emissions during the early days of the event, along with radio and millimeter signals detected by astronomers.

Puzzling Aftermath

Despite the wealth of information, one puzzling aspect remained. Observations from Keck Observatory, Magellan Observatory, and the Very Large Telescope revealed no recognizable chemical signatures during the first month post-explosion. As the event began to diminish, weak signatures of hydrogen and helium gas eventually surfaced.

Interestingly, the helium showed an unexpected clue, moving at over 6,000 kilometers per second, suggesting that a densely bound structure may have survived the initial explosion and is heading toward Earth. Researchers speculate that this signal could originate from a stream of material expelled by the star’s core during its destruction or possibly from a third member of the system being affected by the high-speed wind of particles and X-ray radiation generated by the black hole.
