Arsenal Defeats Manchester City 3-0 in Community Shield Under Maresca’s Management
Enzo Maresca faced a challenging debut as manager of Manchester City, suffering a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Community Shield on Sunday. Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, struck swiftly, with Riccardo Calafiori scoring just 24 seconds into the match at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.
The annual curtain-raiser marked an important early matchup between the two leading teams expected to contend for major trophies this season. Arsenal’s commanding performance included Kai Havertz doubling the score in the 28th minute, capitalizing on a mistake by City’s goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Martin Ødegaard added a third goal shortly after the interval in the 48th minute, executing a clever dummy to bypass Donnarumma and finishing into an empty net. The dominant display by Arsenal left City struggling to threaten their opponent’s goalkeeper David Raya throughout the match.
Arsenal’s supporters were in high spirits, chanting “You’re getting sacked in the morning” towards Maresca as City struggled to respond. Erling Haaland, just back in training post-World Cup, had a frustrating performance, totaling only seven touches before being substituted in the 53rd minute.
Arsenal’s captain Ødegaard expressed confidence in his team’s readiness for the upcoming Premier League season, stating, “I think we showed our level today — that we are ready. We are serious and we want to do it again.” The victory sets a positive tone for Arsenal as they prepare to defend their title against Coventry at home on Friday.
Meanwhile, Manchester City will commence their league campaign two days later at home to Bournemouth, and it remains uncertain whether Maresca will make changes to his lineup following this heavy defeat.
