Terra Industries Secures $18 Million in Funding, Boosting Seed Round to $52 Million
African defense tech company Terra Industries announced on Monday that it has secured an additional $18 million in funding, increasing its total seed round to $52 million. The investment round includes contributions from notable firms such as Joe Lonsdale’s 8VC, Silent Ventures, and Nova Global.
Founded in 2024, Terra Industries has rapidly gained recognition in the African defense technology sector, focusing on the development of autonomous systems, drones, and mine-detecting combat vehicles. The company projects to secure $100 million in contracts, including at least one federal contract, and aims to generate revenue in the tens of millions of dollars by the end of the year.
Earlier in 2023, Terra raised funds through two previous rounds of $11.75 million and $22 million. 8VC, one of the latest investors, is also associated with U.S. defense companies such as Anduril and Shield AI, indicating a robust investment network within the defense sector.
In its market assessment, Terra identifies its competition as any defense company that has successfully obtained government contracts, particularly those based in Turkey, China, and the West. The company aims to address the fragmented defense supply chains prevalent in Africa, which often depend on relationships with international contractors for security intelligence, a situation that can leave them vulnerable.
With the newly secured capital, Terra Industries plans to expand its manufacturing capabilities across the Global South, establish a new office in London, hire additional staff, and expedite product deployment. Additionally, there are intentions to set up an office in San Francisco and enhance its presence in Washington, D.C., facilitating greater access to capital and potential partnerships in the U.S.
