Alex Eala Falls to Amanda Anisimova in Cincinnati Open Round of 16

In a disappointing finish to her Cincinnati Open campaign, Alex Eala was defeated by world No. 10 Amanda Anisimova, with scores of 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, on Monday in Mason, Ohio. The loss marks a setback for Eala, who was aiming for her 10th career win against a top-10 opponent.

Despite her strong performance this season, where she had achieved seven of her nine top-10 victories, Eala was unable to secure a win against Anisimova in their inaugural encounter on the WTA Tour. Anisimova praised Eala’s competitive spirit following the match, stating, “I know Alex is such a great player and such a fighter,” and acknowledged the support she received during the match.

The match experienced intense exchanges, beginning with both players maintaining their serves for the first four games. However, Eala pushed for a break in the fourth game but could not capitalize. The fifth game turned into a lengthy service duel, lasting over 20 minutes and featuring 13 deuces, but Eala ultimately managed to take a 3-2 lead.

Anisimova broke Eala’s serve in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead, but the Filipina recovered by breaking back and winning the following two games, securing the first set 6-4. The second set saw a similar pattern, with Anisimova breaking serve to lead 4-3 and consolidating her advantage by holding serve to move ahead 5-3, eventually taking the set 6-4.

In the third set, Eala started strong, breaking Anisimova to lead 2-0. Unfortunately, Anisimova quickly regained control, winning the next five games and sealing the match with a 6-2 final set.

Looking ahead, Eala is set to compete in the upcoming US Open in Flushing Meadows, where she will participate in both the women’s singles and mixed doubles events alongside Felix Auger-Aliassime. Additionally, she will take part in the Stars of the Open exhibition during Fan Week.
