Einride Shocks the Industry by Adding 500 Tesla Semis to Its Fleet—What’s Behind This Bold Move?

Date:

Einride to Acquire 500 Tesla Semis for North American Operations

Swedish electric and autonomous trucking company Einride announced plans on Tuesday to purchase 500 Tesla Semis, which will be made available to Amazon and other clients. The rollout of these electric trucks will occur in phases over the next 24 months, with the first units expected to be integrated into Einride’s fleet starting in September.

Managing the Tesla Semis will be Einride’s Saga AI software—a fleet management platform that enables customers to reap the advantages of using electric trucks while avoiding the financial and logistical challenges of ownership.

Einride CEO Roozbeh Charli emphasized the significance of this order, stating that it serves as a testament to the company’s ability to meet customer demands at scale.

This deal has substantial implications for Einride, particularly if Tesla can fulfill its commitments. The Tesla Semi was first unveiled in 2017. After numerous delays attributed to the Covid pandemic and global supply chain issues, Tesla delivered its first batch of trucks to customers like PepsiCo five years later. However, the large-scale production of the Semi faced additional setbacks, with the first high-volume production units not completed until April 2026. In a recent shareholder letter, Tesla indicated challenges in ramping up production, specifically concerning the development of its 4680 battery cells.

Einride, which became publicly traded in June, currently operates a fleet of approximately 200 heavy-duty electric trucks, serving prominent companies including Heineken and PepsiCo. The company has also developed cab-less, autonomous trucks, with its Saga AI software managing routing, usage, and charging logistics.

The acquisition of the Tesla Semis is expected to triple Einride’s fleet size and enhance its marketing strategy for the Saga AI software. The Semis will service clients across North America, expanding Einride’s electric freight network to critical corridors in California, Georgia, New Jersey, and Texas. To finance the purchase, Einride is partnering with an external entity.

This acquisition could also facilitate Einride in converting approximately $800 million in “potential long-term annual recurring revenue under joint business plans with shippers” into actual revenue.

Founded a decade ago, Einride has spent years refining the different components of its framework, encompassing electric trucks, software, and autonomous driving systems. The company is now accelerating its growth strategies in 2026.

Additionally, Einride has entered into an agreement with Amazon to add 75 of its electric heavy-duty trucks to the e-commerce leader’s Relay freight network, complemented by charging infrastructure across five U.S. locations. Extending its service capability, Einride also acquired EV charging company Flipturn, enabling it to provide a comprehensive service package, including efficient electric trucks and the requisite charging software.
